128 Jumps out of Reverse

Our one 128 keeps jumping out of reverse. It does not do it in any other gear. What might be the cause? I removed the fender deck, and need to clean the top of the transmission and shifter cover before iI remove it. Any help will be very greatful!! I figured that I woul dtry to fix this while the engine is out for a clean up, base gasket and PTO clutch adjustments.

A good guess would be a bent/damaged shift fork(s). :bigthink:

I would say its your shifter fork is broken, plus the gear for reverse is worn, causing it to pop out. Check this out.....

This does not deal with the forks, but might be useful. The forks tend to crack and then twist, thus not putting it fully into gear, which then starts popping out and rounds the gear over and it wont stay in at all.If the fork is cracked it will need to be replaced or welded,(i like to add some metel around it when fixing it to make it a little stronger)and the reverse gears replaced. If you have to tear into it a manual will be helpful(i did mine without it just fine),but if you do it without it be SURE you keep everything in order.:beerchug:

Thanks for the info. I took the cover off and the shift fork bolt was way loose. I tightened it up. I looked at the fork and it doesn't appear to be cracked or broken. After it is back together I hope that fixed it.

Both my 122, and 124 had that problem. And, the fork was broken on both.
I tightened them up, because I didn't have time to split the chassis on either.
You just need to <gently> finger the shifter into gear...don't force it, and it will work temporarily.
