1650 neutral start switch
Just picked up a 1650 that is complete but neglected. The start switch does not energize the starter when turned. It will start by jumping the solenoid switch under the hood/dash. I have installed a temp start button but I would like to get back to original system. It doesn't look like anything was bypassed so I figure it is a switch malfunction. I can't find it on the brake linkage so it must be on the forward neutral reverse lever and I am having trouble locating it. There is a 2 terminal switch on the brake cross shaft under the chassis but it is not connected to anything and I see no wires hanging around. Where is it located and what is the most common cause of this problem? Neutral/start switch or key switch?

First make sure the PTO "toggle" switch is not engaged in the up position. There is only the one safety switch on the rock shaft/brake shaft area that you say is unplugged. I would remove the tunnel cover and the fuel tank so you can search/inspect further. 9 times out of 10 someone has put a jumper wire on the safety switch plug in...then check out the ignition switch contacts/plug in for corrosion for heat/amp melt down.

1650 safety switch
The switch that I found on the frame cross member, just above the brake cross shaft, is connected to nothing and must be what I am looking for. The spring lever, shown on the parts diagram, on the brake shaft that actuates the switch is missing. Now I just have to find the wires that were connected to the switch. Thanks for the help, the colored wiring diagram is great.
