Complete Spring Lift Assist for Wide Frame 128
 

I am trying to get an old 128 and model 1 tiller going for my 80 y.o. dad so he can still do some gardening. He has had to quit using his regular cub as he was having trouble getting on it (both hips and one knee have been replaced
And he needs the other knee done). His troy built horse tiller threw a rod and i will be looking at fixing that soon but since i got the 128 running fairly easily, i figured i would give him That. I just hope he can swing his leg over it to get on!

Anyway! I have gotten the tiller going, broke the old original IH belt from gearbox up to tiller, need to go to TSC for a new one, but the tiller is pretty heavy for me to lift and i dont think he can do it as is. I remembered seeing a spring assist for these before and wanted to see if anyone had one. I need all the parts, (rod, spring brackets bolts, Etc.) so the more complete the better. It would need to be shipped unless close to Austin, Ft. Worth or. Victoria, Tx areas.

I have a tiller on a manual lift tractor. Even with it cranked down tight, the tiller is still pretty heavy. You need a hydraulic lift tractor.

Might be cheaper to find a parts tractor with the spring assist on it.

Options like that are usually the 1st things gone from a parts tractor.

The solution to "get a hydraulic lift tractor" sounds great, but these tractors arent too common in Texas. I have come across two in the last year and the sellers wanted $1500 for an unrestored 129 with a tiller and $3500 for a restored 149 with just a mower deck.

I ordered a spring assist set up from IHCCW for $135 shipped and will give it a shot.

How about electric lifts? Did they work very well? I see that the same company has one for my 128, but its $600. Unfortunately out of my budget right now.

I recall seeing a yellow hydraulic pump brackets and lines at my dads. He said he didnt know what it fit. I think it was in my uncle's junk when we got the 128, a 582S and a 73. (He knew good tractors. He also had to Farmall Cubs that I also inherited.) My other uncle had a farmall cub with fast hitch and a bunch if implements. Unfortunately my aunt sold it without asking my dad if he was interested. I have seven farmall cubs and two cub lo boys (not number series) and none of them have the fast hitch! I do have a Super C with it, though!

A hydraulic set up to work on a gear drive Cub will be pricey as well.
Dad's still gonna need both hands to hoist up that tiller even with a SA.

Yikes!! I did not know that the WF spring assist were going that high. I see them at swap meets for around $45 all of the time. Gonna bag several of them. The hydraulic lift would work best for your dad's needs, especially with that tiller. Since you are going to try out the spring assist on it, my advice would be to try to cut weight whenever possible for him, so that would be to remove any extensions on the tiller, if it has them. Mark Hellrung put a hydraulic lift on a 128 and did an awesome job at it. Like myself, he got burnt out on all of the drama here and I haven't heard of him for quite some time. He is a very nice fella and I am sure he would share pictures of his work, if you asked him to share or they may be under his profile still. Spring assists aren't normally going for that much. If I need a part I can't find, I would highly recommend IHCCW, but some things he is bit high on. Normally they go on evil pay for around $100-$125. Be nice to find a few for $45 though. :biggrin2:
