My Grandfather's 100

4 Attachment(s)
I know lately I've been more of a project starter than a project finisher, to be honest I'm a little burned out on cubs and have been focusing on RC racing with my son, hopefully this project will help light the fire again. It's been widely known in the family that when my grandfather passed I wanted the cub, luckily he is still with us and in great health but he no longer has a need for it since he moved from the country to town. I'm very excited about this project because he will be able to see it when it's finished, i think it will be very rewarding to see his face when he takes it for a spin once it's all shined up. As you can see from the pics the 100 has had a rough life, it's always had the plow on it and has moved a mountain of dirt and gravel over the years. The only things I plan to add are fenders and spring assist, and I'm planning to repair the frame and hood instead of replacing them.

Good call for the hood and frame, this is a "Keeper" project, take a picture of your grand dad face looking at his "use to be" cub when it's finish! No word can describe this moment, It's pure gold! Have fun Tim. :beerchug:

farmall fred 03-27-2017 09:41 AM

Good to see you restoring your grandfathers tractor. The hood mod does not suprise me as the steering wheel clearance was almost non existant without the grill getting used as a push bar. I will subscribe to this thread as the 100 is one of my favorites. I really like mine as it was the first Cub Cadet I restored and it still is a worker.
Good luck with your project.
Tom

Looks like a great project. Pictures. Lots of pictures!

darkminion_17 03-27-2017 10:26 AM

That is a good thing to do for your Grandfather, How long do you think it will take?
I know a guy who has a hood and a frame...:biggrin2:

What I need is a guy willing to cut off the tunnel cover and send it to me, I'd like to keep as many of the original parts as possible. I have a junk hood sitting here that I'm going to cut up to repair the original.

darkminion_17 03-27-2017 10:42 AM

That would be easy, too bad you did not need one a month ago as I sent a cut up frame to the scrapper with the tunnel still on it.
I would think any gear drive NF cub one would work for you, you would have to make it shorter though....

I'm getting fenders from Deltacub and I think she's parting out a couple so hopefully I can get it from her.

ACecil 03-27-2017 03:21 PM

Glad you got your grandfather's 100. It will always be a special cub to you.

Terry C 03-27-2017 03:30 PM

Cool project! Looks like grandpa liked plenty of cushion on the seat :biggrin2:

Cub Cadet 123 03-27-2017 03:42 PM

Maybe you can get it done and your grandfather can ride it in a parade or something cool like that. Nice project and for a great cause. Glad it is in caring hands once again. Nice one Tim!

Tim, I am currently parting out a 100 with decent chassis... Let me know what else you need. Sold the hood already...:beerchug:

john hall 03-27-2017 10:22 PM

GREAT project! So will you use this one or will it be display only? I vote show it the love it deserves, then put it right back to work. Post pics as you go please.

Billy-O 03-27-2017 11:15 PM

That's a cool project...... you gotta get us a picture with your Grandpa when all done!

What is that blue thingy below the dash?

I've been waiting for someone to ask about that, it's a plastic outlet box that he screwed on because he kept breaking the key off in the ignition when getting on and off.

zippy1 03-27-2017 11:32 PM

You got your work cut out for you Tim.:bigthink: But I and a bunch of others will be pulling for yah.:beerchug:

jaynjeep 03-27-2017 11:59 PM

i LIKE THE PROJECT TIM!!:biggrin2::biggrin2:
100'S ARE MY FAVORITE...
i MAY HAVE A JUNK FRAME i COULD CUT FOR YOU... I NEED TO LOOK IN THE JUNKPILE AND SEE IF IT'S STILL THERE.

cubcadet 03-28-2017 06:36 AM

Looks like a good project!

PaulS 03-28-2017 07:42 AM

What a great project for grandpa. Do it while he is alive. Eric and I are going to start a project to honor my dad, Eric's grandpa but he is no longer here to watch or appreciate the honor. Yes do it now. With your skills it will be a great tribute to him.

ambrola 03-28-2017 10:04 AM

Tim, I have the bracket for the spring assist. I also have a spring that I cut down that will work. They are for an Original, but I think they are the same? You can have them if you need them. Great project for you and Grandpa. Byw, I also have a seat if they are the same as the Originals? It has been welded and is in primer.

Thanks for the offer but the 100 uses a different spring assist, I also found the correct seat locally for $10 so I'm good there also.

Oh well, I have a bunch of parts that are yours if you can use them. I would like to see Grandad on his old Cub. :biggrin2:

olds45512 03-31-2017 09:18 AM

I have fenders and a frame lined up and with any luck I can pick them up Sunday, I've also talked to Jeff about a driveshaft. I think for now I'm going to skip the engine rebuild, the engine runs great and doesn't smoke and I really don't have the extra funds for a rebuild at this time. After 6yrs my wife has finally got a job which has severely limited my free time but hopefully I can start working on it early next week.

olds45512 04-02-2017 07:51 PM

I took a ride out to Ohio today to visit Deltacub, she gave me a great deal on some fenders and a frame and even threw in a few extra parts for free. With these parts in hand I can now begin the process of straightening everything out so the parts fit properly and then it will be time to disassemble for it's date with the sandblaster. Thanks again Deltacub.:beerchug:

darkminion_17 04-02-2017 07:55 PM

Always great to meet a forum member, How far is Ohio from you Tim?

Always nice to visit with you Tim! Looking forward to the outcome:beerchug: of Grandpa's tractor restoration. Thanks again!

Looks like you have your work cut out for you Tim. I'm sure you can handle it.

Decals are on the way and as soon as I remember to write down the numbers I will order the new engine tag from redoyourhorse.

Do you know what sucks worse than having no money? Having no time. Since my wife started a new job last week I have to go straight from work to home to get my son off the bus which eliminates working in the evenings. I'm gonna push hard to have this done and at PA plow day but I'd be shocked if I can pull it off, I only have about 6 workable days from now till then and it will flat out take a miracle.

olds45512 04-04-2017 03:19 PM

The engine id tag has been ordered so all that's really left to order is a clutch disk, I'm gonna have a pile of parts pretty soon and hopefully I can find the time to work on it. The other body guy here offered to help with the bodywork on the fenders and hood which would be a great help but I declined because it doesn't feel right farming out the work to someone else on this particular project.

Got that right! Kids rule my free time also. I'm just thankful they are healthy. I'll be lucky to have the 70 I am working on done in the next two years at this rate!!!

darkminion_17 04-04-2017 07:37 PM

Tim,
I would like to see that 100 at plow day, 6 days is plenty of time in your profession, so get to work and to get some help to get it done, swallow your pride, a little help goes a long way...

Why don't you give him the Lew line and call him a slacker?

darkminion_17 04-04-2017 07:48 PM

Tim,
Alvy told me to tell you are a slacker.
You are a slacker.
Alvy is a slacker, no new post about the 169.
Alvy is a slacker.

You'll figure it out and if you don't, it doesn't matter in the long run. You have your grandfathers tractor and are restoring it, missing a plow day isn't that important. By the way, blink twice, maybe 3 times and your son will have a drivers license, just saying.:bigthink:

If you have quality help offered, then why not take it. I get this is a family heirloom. If the engine needed machine work, you'd hire it done. You'd hire tires changed also. I'm sure your grandfather will understand and approve of enlisting some help.:beerchug:

zippy1 04-04-2017 11:51 PM

So you cleaning up and using the factory IH bolts, or going the off brand run of the mill, everyday bolts? Then again, I don't recall you saying you were doing a restoration in the first place... Or are you?:bigthink:
