Throttle cable question
Hi all.
I've been pondering the throttle setup on my 72. It has a K301 in it, as its original k161 was heavily damaged in a fire several years ago. It's used an aftermarket throttle cable for years, mounted to the side of the tower. As my daughter is getting closer to an age where she can help me in the shop, I want to start amassing parts to make it a little closer to its original setup, but keep the engine that's in it. What I'm wondering is if a 72 throttle cable will reach the carb, or if I will have to improvise. I do know that a 125 throttle cable doesn't fit in the 72, already tried that with a spare I had. Anyone tried this out there? Thanks for your help. Not a huge rush on this, the restoration is still a couple years in the future.

Here is the data I found:
72 uses IH-543918-R1 Throttle Cable and is NLA 125 uses IH-543919-R1 Throttle Cable and is Available Throttle Cable IH-543918-R1 was used on models: 72 & 73 Throttle Cable IH-543919-R1 was used on models: 104,105,106,107,124,125,126,127, & 147 Pay attention to the "action" of each cable. It "appears" one pulls from the top of the mount, while the other pulls from the bottom. Attached are images of each cable. From what is pictured, it "appears" the IH-543918-R1 is the longer cable. BTW: Sponsor RH Houtz has a good used IH-543918-R1 cable in inventory.

Thank you Roland. That "pull" action is the problem I ran into. The bracket on it looks like a perfect fit, from a distance. Then you get under the dash and realize the bracket is on the wrong side. I'll see if I can pick up that correct cable. Hard to tell from the pics, but they seem to be a comparable length so I don't think I'll end up short. If it does then maybe the 125 cable can be made to work with spacers.

I think a throttle control cable from a model 100 would work for you, since you up-graded to a larger engine. It's been mentioned on OCC before, that the model 70 throttle control cable are in fact longer due to the particular routing for the smaller k161 engine. I can't say what the length difference is for your series because there was never a larger engine in the same model with same dash tower than the k161.
I'd go with a good used, original equipment replacement part from one of the many OCC sponsors, or place an add in the proper section of the forum.
