I figured I should deal with the hydraulic valve while the engine is out of the way.
Nothing really lined up well and there was just a very sloppy bolt connecting the lever directly to the spool which allowed enough free play not to bind. I’m pretty sure now that the whole thing is home made although the cross shaft is bent nicely. I resealed the valve and decided to just rework what was there. I drilled holes through the lever and shaft to relocate it properly and used a #50 chain link to connect the spool to the lever. Everything lines up properly now and operates smoothly. Painting is 95% done, but I can see the topside of the pan will need a wet sand and one final coat. |

As an original "shadetree mechanic" I really appreciate watching someone who actually has skills and knowledge do their thing.
Great work and thanks for sharing it with us.

Thanks all!
I have been getting some things done but not a lot and not much worth posting about. Today was a beautiful spring day with no wind, 55F and much warmer in the direct sun and so far only one bug. I shot the final coat on the fender pan and I’m satisfied with it now. The one bug is now part of the footrest. It was also a nice day to smoke some salmon. |

CC 149 Winter Projects
Gee, I wonder how that tractor would look if it was that appetizing salmon color instead of IH red?

I’ve been missing in action for the last while, busy with travel, family and other chores. I all of a sudden realized that my “Winter Project” just ran into spring and I’m out of time. So I put the tractor back together, ready for work. I did have to put a rear lift project on hold for now also. What’s there is working well anyway. Just a few quick pics for now, then I fill in a few details later tonight.

Beautiful work. Looks like it's gonna need some dirt on it just
to get it used to the real world again. Ken |

Oh, it will get dirty!
I was going to buy a new seat, but man they are expensive!! A PO had adapted this seat to the Cub with a bunch of flat bar. To remedy that, I removed the skin and foam then relocated the nuts to fit my seat spring’s bolt pattern. I taped the cracks with Gorilla Tape and I’ll buy a seat cover. Plus I have several pieces of flat bar now. |

Decent brand mufflers are also very expensive.! Mine is not rotted or even badly rusted, so I wire brushed it off. Either its original or was replaced with an original. I figured I might as well use it, but I also wanted to move it out of the engine bay. Ideally the exhaust would be run out the back, but having the 4X4” steel tube from the loader in the way, makes it difficult I welded threads back unto the elbow. I made a bracket to mount under the front cross tube at the front of the tractor. I had some stainless flex pipe of the right size and I machined an adapter from the muffler to that. The exhaust will now blow low and forward instead of out the side .
If I like the location, I’ll redo the elbow to shorten it a bit and add a bit of bend past 90 to better align the flex pipe. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
