Default Cub 147 PTO Clutch Screws

I just looked on a dealer site for IH-23025-R1 set screws for my 147 PTO clutch - $15.24, OUCH! Anyone make their own pointed set screws in a small lathe? The closest I could find on McMaster-Carr had a flat spot on the end. Looked liked they had stainless ones that are pointed. Anyone use these?

I have not done this yet, but I think next time I re-install a PTO I will use stainless Allen set screws (both sets) to prevent rusting into the pulley.
In addition I'll use longer ones for the second set (jam screws) so that they protrude above the top of the hole to prevent the hole from filling up with crud.
Hopefully to make any subsequent removals much easier.

Anyones thoughts?

I thought I saw a puddy cat...

I know the threads do not go all the way to the top so crud will accumulate, try stuffing tin foil in the hole.

I've always thought anti-sieze would be a good barrier against rust and crud.

FWIW:
My experience with Settin' screws is they are hardened.
AND if they protrude out of the thread and are tight/rusted when one tries to loosen them, the hex will split open, and that is not a good thing.
And Stainless while rust resistant, is softer metal so the hex swells and strips.
Your mileage may vary.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
