Ok,
Can you post a pix of the starter, as i want to see what you are working on, not having worked on your particular mower. But mostly all the newer stuff has Perm magnet fields, not wire field coils. If it were mine, I'd take the OEM starter apart and do a little detective work. if the jumper cables are getting warm, is sounds like the problem is inside the starter.

Well, I got it running. Turns out, the new starter was not supplied with a small plastic washer that isolated the positive terminal from grounding out. When I removed the washer from the old starter and put on the new one, it tested just fine! It’s all back together now and I really appreciate the help offered by the Cub community!
