Default Identifying Kohler KT17 Series I & II

I have a 782 s/n 2050594U683758. The spec. # and model on the Kohler have worn off. The housing on the engine says Series II. Is it correct for the tractor and how can you tell the differance between the two engines? Is there anywhere else on the engine that has numbers stamped?

that engine is most likely a replacement engine. According to your 782's serial number, it is too old to have had a Series II in it from the factory.

According to the Parts Manuals, and if everything is original, here is the breakdown:

Series I were installed in Chassis Serial Numbers below 726124
Series II were installed in Chassis Serial Numbers above 726125

The housing says Series II or the air cleaner? May just be a replacement air cleaner cover. Can you see a provision for an external oil filter on the right side? (I think that's right) Some Series II's have this as an option. Not all, but some if I remember right. Go to Kohlers website and download the manual for the KT17 it will have more info as to help tell the difference.

Disclaimer... I may be way off here as I've never had one, just regurgitating what I've read previously on other forums.

If you look at my picture and follow where the two lines hook to the engine, that's where you would have an oil filter adapter block-off plate installed with two allenhead bolts. If it has this, it's definitely a series II. But like Keith said, some of the early series II didn't have this.

My 782 is an '84 or '85 and its series II doesn't have the oil filter provision, either.

It's definitely a Series II then. Spec should be 24302. That's definitely not the original engine for that tractor which is a good thing. It most likely came from the factory with a Series I. Is your serial number worn off on the engine also. You can tell what year it was made by the serial number. My Series II was built in '94.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
