Recently I pulled the engine out of the 1712, stripped it down to a 'short block', and took it in for a rebuild. I took it to a shop with MANY MANY years experience with engines, machining, tractors, racing go karts, race cars, and restoration of antique tractors and race cars....the same folks that rebuilt my 1450's engine, and folks that I have personally known for 33 years. Steve and George Myers at S-Tech in Cridersville, OH.
Friday I got a call that it was ready to be picked up, so yesterday I went and settled up, and brought it home. Today I started putting the bolt on parts back on, and getting ready to drop it back in. The KT17 Series II had 937 hours on it. The rings were shot...otherwise the jugs cleaned up with a light hone job!! The valves were ground and lapped in, and the only new parts that were required were the rings, the rest of the engine is still within spec, and tight! Here is to another 27 years of service from my CCC built, 1985 model year, model 1712 Cub Cadet |

Had a good Cub day today. I started by cleaning up the Cub Cave and getting things back in order. I got the CI grille for my nephew's 73 wire brushed and primered. I also got the old tires and tubes off of the front rims and wire brushed them and got them into some primer. Gave Big Red a hose down with the air hose then cleaned and waxed her up a bit. I did notice a bit of oil surrounding the left rear ISO mount. It seemed to be coming from the dipstick area. This might be why that old mount was degraded so bad. I may have to order a new dipstick so that it seals better unless someone has a good BTDT remedy.

Changed the hydro filter on the 3235, topped off the fluid, warmed everything up to check operation. ALL GOOD!!

Good cub day
Had a bad bearing on the mule drive of the 123. Took it off and wandered around our local farm supply store and found the bearings and bought two (US made, no less). Bolted right in and ran nice and quiet. Greased the front hubs and the deck bearings and it should be good to go.
Also got the governor working on the "O" and scooted around the yard on it some. It was a good cub day! John |
Glad you had a good cub day, John!

Thanks DX3! Just a little clean up for the show and call it good. Painted the grill and footrests. Scrubed the screen, footrests still drying.

Mowed grass at my dads house with the 1811, then went to my house and with a little help from son in law we used the 1811 to pull my old 147 out from where its been sitting for 15 years and to the shop for the start of a makeover.:biggrin2: checked a prob on the 1720 dad uses to run around the farm where his jazzy wont go. finally started a list of parts needed for the 102 to get it up and running. Whew what a day:beerchug:

Spent last weekend turning the 70 into a mowing tractor. I got an undercarriage and mule off of my 72 and a 42 inch deck off my 129 and in about 30 minutes I was mowing, sort of. Today I done some fine tuningand adjusting, she handles the 42 pretty good but its a load in spots. Feels great to get some seat time on it since there was no snow removal time this winter.

Today, I spent most of the day working on the new 109. Got the blown K241 out, to find (after sanding on the crank, and honing the bore) that it is still usable. Hope to get parts in this week, and have it back in the 109 by this next weekend, ready to sell. :beerchug:

Took a trip Vince O's place 223 miles one way. Picked up a 60" Haban for one of my Supers. Stopped at Dukes on the way checked his O project. Vince rebuilt the carb for my 147 it was just a little worn LOL. Did some trail riding with Vince on his tractors. Guy has some awesome trails around his place. Then it was off to China Grove on the way back to pick up some parts for a JD 317. 13 hours on the road. :biggrin2:
