The new paint is looking good, Todd!
|
Thanks Allen.
I was looking through the net tonight, and knowing my deck id. plate indicates it's a 44C, but everything indicates it's a 44A. Looking at the spindles, they seem to be the style of the A. Plus the A style deck doesn't have the front gauge wheels. But it seems the id. plate has never been removed, so I have no reason to think it's been replaced. I know Roland mentioned the C. style deck was used from 1979 till 1985, but shouldn't that style deck have the other spindles? Thanks |
When I took my cups off the spindles I left the big nuts on the end but not all the way on and whacked them with a piece of sheet metal between the nut and the hammer. They came off real fast.:beerchug:

44a had the 1/2 pulley for quietline and 44c had 5/8 pulley for 82 and newer series. xtreme motorworks makes front wheel mounts that you can weld on to add them easily. i did it last year and glad i did. no more rolling sod when i turn corners

Thanks guys. But it really don't matter, it's just that I'm anal about things that don't make sence in my head. Especially when a picture shows one thing, and mine is another.
The spindle thing has really got me hung up on it being an A not a C. For instance if I needed to purchace a new spindle, what would I order? They are both different. |

Got to do a little yesterday on the deck.
Here's a picture of another spindle. Rust, rust. |
That's a lot of rust!

Todd, About a month ago i restored a 44 c and it sounds like we have the same decks , old style spindles and no front gauge wheels. I had a scrap 50 c with new style spindles and front wheels. I cut off the 50's front wheel brackets and welded them on the 44. I like the look with front wheels, i dont know why. I also ran a 3/8 steel rod around the bottom edge of the deck and boy did that make the deck strong without changing the looks. Dave

i have an old 44 LT deck I could get the front front wheel brackets from. But the spindles are un greasable. The old style spindles were throwing me off. |
Yea my old 44 spindles looked just as nasty as yours, a wire brush and lots of grease i put them back in because they were tighter than the 50's. I wanted to replace the 3 big (but thin) pulley nuts that were on the 44 but could not find a good replacement so i used the old ones. I will try to post some pics of my 44 c later today. Dave
