Ok so I will repower it. Mow to figure out what I want to repower it with. I found this here locally. I know you used a 18HP magnum and this is a 18.5 magnum from a sears. Think it would work?

ALso how heavy are these engines. WIll I need to rig an engine puller or can two guys lift them out and put one back in?

My son and I just last night installed a command 18 by just picking it up and putting it in place. It has some weight but not too much for two people to handle. We have done the same thing with a command 20.

Hi there berryhillbrian! I bought a sears GT 6000 with a kohler mag 18 in it 2 yrs ago for 2 hundred bucks, mowed with it for a year and a half, pulled the engine and stuck it in my 582 special. Fit right in, Lifted it myself by hand, their heavy, but it can be done. Works real good. Good luck with yours!!!!

If it were me I'd PASS. The engines in those are expensive to replace. But then again, I'm not a 782 guy, and I'm not knocking how well they work.

+1 on the lifting myself, and I'm nearing 70.
With two guys it is a joke, lifting it in/out.
If you are patient you can find a mag and not break the bank.
How often do you fing a low hour red rose like that? almost NEVER!
You could put in a expensive engine, use it a lifetime and it still would be nicer than what you can buy today and less expensive!
But that is just my thoughts

After talking to you guys I am pretty excited.

I just found this and plan on picking it up tonight. All the guy knows is its a 1987 cub cadet with a 18HP magnum. Looks to me from the gear shifter under the seat to be an 1806. Its missing the manual lifter and all but I would think it would have everything I need to repower my 782. Also has a 50" deck that looks to be in pretty good shape and he says tire are in good shape no dry rot. So there is my tires and engine. Will make a fine parts tractor I think.:biggrin2:

The guy wants 300.00 for it. Does that sound reasonable. He says the engine turns over and runs for a minute but then dies. Says it has not been run in a while an probably needs a carb cleaning.

OK here's the deal, Listen cause I'm only gonna say this one time. Buy both, clean the carb on the yellow toy and then sell it. Get the 782, take your time and look for a 2185, (should be a $300 or so deal) like I told you before. Take the engine out of the 2185 and put it in the 782. Sell the remains of the 2185 on C-List and you will probably come out close to even with a free engine. :beerchug:

Sam Mac has a great idea and you would have a newer engine that you can get parts for. But on the other hand you can lift the whole engine/wiring harness out of the 1810 and gain the low oil light.If you go that way you could have a running tractor in about four hours.I did the swap of a 1810/682 and it worked great.Just my two cents and you win either way good luck on your new 782 they are very nice machines.
