Well the parts lookup says dowel, guy at the CC Dealership says spirol, mine is a spirol pin. I guess I will use it till the ol girl decides to stop moving then I will know! The dowel would have to be tapered to allow it to stay in place but I would think that over time would not be good for the hole. Just a thought

Yes you can replace the coupler. Go to this thread and you'll see a couple ways to deal with the issue.

As far as i know (which may not be much) the front one should be a dowel, as it is hardened and can shear if need be, sort of a sacrificial break in lew of something more costly to the driveline...the rear one should be a spirol pin, Which isnt a roll pin and which will not break...all this being said; i put spirol pins in both ends of mine when i did it...also i do the same mod mr bedell mentioned about the 2 flex disks, and slightly longer bolts...especially for the quietlines...

Update on this...after I got home from work last nite I headed to the shop to take a 2nd looksee at this and I had to remove the shaft as the fan was set a bit too far forward, so I adjusted this and put everything back together. Too my surprise it all went back together well and I was mowing the yard within an hour. The only thing I did notice after mowing when I shut the deck down and just running the tractor around I could feel a vibration that I didn't notice before. I still have the tunnel cover off and was looking and it appears that the shaft and everything is running true. This vibration seems to be coming from the motor end. Maybe something isn't quite lined up right but it looks as it is!
