Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm going to see the process through. I felt it run on just one cylinder and it was impressive. My little craftsman doesn't hold a candle to the 982.
It will be a worker but not a heavy worker, mostly mowing the lawn and moving wood around the property from time to time. If it fails after the rebuild I may consider doing an electric conversion if I can figure out the batteries. I figure it's the only thing that can match the torque these things produce.

You can't compare an SGT to a lawn tractor.

Electric conversion? Your out of your mind. That would ruin it. If you don't think you can get another engine that will be just as good as an Onan, your wrong. Sell it to someone else before doing an electric conversion. A 982 deserves better!!

I'm glad to hear your going to fix the Onan. Probably not the most economical option, but at least your fixing a great tractor.

If you are going to just mow and pull stuff around the yard, a repower with
A vanguard or command will be plenty. I repowered a 782 with a ch20 and
while it's not the torque monster the Onan in the 982 is, it's still got power
to spare. You can watch for a donor tractor and be repowered for less
then you think. Like J says a 982 deserves better than a rayovac conversion
