Well it ran good for about 45 minutes and then started spurting like it was running out of fuel. Now I get to work on a fuel delivery issue.

Go straight to the petcock valves and clean them, replace the bungs. All three cyclops tractors i've gotten were gunked up inside the valves and the bungs wet and smelling of gas.

Thanks, Jonathan. I really like the Vanguard. In the past I thought they were not a good engine but I have now changed my mind. I like it as much as the Kohler Command. It may find a new home in my spare 1864, that has a bad engine.

I think that is a good place to start. I have been using it a little to try and get the gas level down. It was full when I got it. :biggrin2:

I have reading these for quite some time. Thanks for putting all this together.

I got a chance to look at the 1641 and the bottom of the carb bowl had trash in the bottom. I cleaned it out the best I could. It runs better but still not perfect.

How do you remove the carb on these? I mean the easiest way to remove the carb. I have good fuel flow but I still am planning on replacing the bungs and replacing the fuel lines. Just have not have time to do it yet.

To take the carb off, it's best to pull the engine. You can get it off without doing that but it's not worth it.

Here is what I do to clean a Vanguard carburetor.

Pull the top off the carb. Re move the jet in the rear of the carb. Turn the key on to open the fuel shut off solenoid out of the jet. Start blowing with compressed air. Reassemble. This seems to work well for me and a lot less trouble than pulling the carb off.

You can also get the fuel solenoid off with the engine in place if required.

Thanks Mike, it looked like pulling the engine was the best way.

Finally got around to my back up mower. The fuel tank was a mess and the cut offs were full of rust and crud. See below. Got it buttoned back up, lines changed and will start it in the morning.
