Here is the tag on the motor. It appears to be a series II so I am guess it was replaced at some point, but I think it was early in its life because it looks much like the rest of the tractor.

I know there is somewhere to look up when the motor was made, but I can't find it for the life of me.

The Service Manual for that only shows the first few years. I'm not entirely sure how long they made KT17s, but if the numbering follows the same pattern as the Magnums did (which continued the pattern of the KT17s) that serial # should be 1994. That's a pretty late replacement engine if that's the case.

YUP, you definitely have a KT-17 Series II. I agree with Gompers, it must have been a replacement engine in 1994.

You have the Tri-fecta. (1) Cast Iron rear end, (2) a 784, and (3) a series II engine.

Now if it had a 3 point hitch....
I don’t think IH ever offered one on the 782 (just a sleeve hitch), but I know CCC did. I don’t know if that was just for the aluminum rears or for the cast iron ones they did early in the run as well.

At any rate, that’s a fantastic deal for a great tractor. If that’s only it’s second engine, that means the first one (which would have been a series I from the factory) lasted at least 12 years. Which means maintenance must have been relatively good on it, since those series Is were a bit more finicky when it came to that.

Also, I can’t imagine that late in the KT17 production run that they weren’t basically building M18s with a different ignition system, so it’s probably about the best case scenario KT17-wise (with the possible exception of actually having the remote oil filter kit installed).

Cub Cadet DID offer a 3 Pt Cat O hitch....

J-Mech 02-04-2018 08:46 AM

IH never offered the cat 0 hitch. It came out after the MTD buyout. Only on AL rear ends, but will fit a CI one.
