I have noticed when watching some of the home renovation shows either American or Australian the experts (I use that word loosely) are wandering around with the Pantone book trying to assess what colours would be suitable
Please note I do not watch a lot of that
I hope my explanation helps

I was not previously aware of the Pantone System. Thanks for your explanation.
Since it is considered such a high industry standard, wouldn't it be nice if the rattle can paint producers would
include somthing on the rattle can label such as "Matches Pantone 1205C or "Comparable to Pantone 1205C".

Pantone books also give you a mix ratio for all the colors. A guy can get
pretty darn close to anything in the book by following that.
Printers know all about this stuff. Hey Oz were you a printer?
I spent 30 years printing and pantone books are the bible of print colors.

Guilty as charged started as a Letterpress printer and converted over to Lithography in my twenties then bailed out of ink under fingernails and went to the promotion and sales and demographic marketing of the Newspaper industry
As you may have guessed I still have a trusty Pantone book stored in a dark space to limit colour change and fade
As West Valley G says you can get very close to any colour and then fudge a bit to get spot on
You cannot beat a good draw down test with the triangle cutout
Without dragging this thread to far off course what was your background West Valley G ?
That is a great idea Ironman
