Yes, they are great machine! Good thing there isn't any computers! I'll check it out, thank you! :beerchug:

After using the advice to tap the starter solenoid, the starter did spin. After that, the engine would crank and try to start! It would not turn over, but I will do some maintenance on it. It also very cold here in Kansas at the moment, so that's contributing to it too. Thank you everyone for all the advice and help! I love this place! :beerchug:

I'm confused?
You say the starter spun and the engine was cranking and tried to start.
Then you said it would not turn over---HUH?

Cranking is turning over, its the process of the engine turning (rotating) whether it be with a rope, starter mechanism, or a hand crank like used before we had electric starters.

So was the engine cranking over (turning) and trying to start, but would not run on its own power? :bigthink:

That's my bad on the wording, my wording was a bit off. Thanks for the help with that! Yes, you're correct, the engine was cranking over and trying to start, but would not run on its own power.

I've read this whole thread a couple times, I didn't see any posts advising to tap on the starter.
So just to clarify, are you saying that after you tapped on the starter the engine now cranks (turns over) using the key,
and is showing chugging or popping or something like that as some attempt to start??

ol'George 12-05-2025 02:35 PM

FWIW:
its ok to tap on the starter SOLENOID but not on the starter, as it has permanent maggots inside and they get upset and break into smaller maggots then the starter no workie at its full potential.
---(Ok so they are magnets.) :biggrin2:
Understand that a little "tapping" with a screwdriver handle is ok but not a whack with a hammer.

I might have accidentally put starter, but I tapped the starter solenoid with a screwdriver and now the engine cranks with the key. I did not tap the starter, just the solenoid. It makes a chugging type sound in an attempt to start.

So now we are getting somewhere.
We can assume that your bat-tree is good because it cranks the engine.
We can assume that your solenoid is good because it operates the starter when you turn the key to "start".
So now we have to determine if the engine is getting spark and fuel.
Spark starts at the battery, which, we have assumed is good.
Spark is created by the ignition system, and in your case, with voltage from the battery to the coil & points.
The battery voltage gets to the coil & points thru the key switch, so the next step would be to determine if that that is happening.
How to do? Very easy. With a 12 volt test light, attach one lead to the positive (+) terminal on the coil, attach the other lead to a good, clean ground on the engine.
Crank the engine with the key, light should flash on and off. Report back & we'll move on.

Okay thank you for the help! I will test the coil! I will report back after I do it! Thank you! :beerchug:

This morning I went and tested the coil and cleaned the points up. I got a red flashing light. And after a bit, the mower started right up and runs amazing! It sounds great! All I need to do now is change some fluids! Thank you everyone for all the help! :beerchug:
