Yes I did swap the VR on the M20.

If the stator is shorted to ground what happens when those windings start cranking out AC?

Nothing. It dead shorts and makes nothing. Incomplete windings don't make anything.

It's not really a hi-jack. Helping people understand how an alternator works may help them fix their problem.

hmm wierd, last year that M20 stator had continuity to ground with engine off and 33 VAC WOT. All I know is replacing the stator fixed it and I'm happy for that. It was my first time that deep in a repair.

Great news. It was only the ground. A shiny bolt was all that was needed. Thanks to everyone for their help. I learned a lot!
