Ive emailed the guy with the 1864. Just waiting for a reply.

The 2165 has been a great mower until last year. It started blowing oil into the air cleaner box and would drip a little oil when the engine was warm. New head gaskets solved that but by the end of summer, I started getting the dripping oil again. Its not bad enough to blow the oil into the air cleaner yet but I suspect that's coming soon. Im assuming since new head gaskets fixed it temporarily that I may have a warped head. It only has a little more than 700 hours on it an Ive read the Vanguards should easily run for 2000 hours.

All of these are reasonably close to you and I'd go look at all of them with an eye to buy/negotiate.

Wow, thanks for your time and work. I used Search Tempest but didnt go out more than 150 miles. I also used the key words Cub Cadet Super and didn't come up with much. What key words did you use? Thanks again, Ill send some emails!

Oh, are those tall stacks stock on that 16 horse model? That just looks cool!

I agree with Sam.

A warped head is not a big deal like on a car.

Each cylinder has its own head and there is no overhead cam. With care you should be able to flatten the head with sandpaper covered glass. I have done this with L heads and air compressor.

I ran into an 1864 that had under 500 hours on it and I think a 48 inch deck and the guy wanted $500 for it. It needed some work and a seal but not a bad deal. Can get you his number if you're interested pm me.

A warped head is a big deal, just like on a car. Or did you mean, you don't have to have it machined like you do on a car? :bigthink:

The overhead valve engines are not known to warp heads. What does overhead cam have to do with anything???

I might be interested and I'll take the number. Thanks.

1864 w/ 54" deck can't be beat as far as I'm concerned.:biggrin2:

Sam was suggesting that the OP fix his current cub. I agreed with that.

One reason the OP wants a new tractor is because his might have a warped head. I was pointing out that the fix is relatively easy. Not a big enough problem to give up on the tractor. So yes I meant You don't have to have it machined like you do on a car

If it had an OHC in the head you would have to take it to a machine shop. Part of what makes this not a big deal.

No you wouldn't.

I have a 16HP Vanguard that someone worked on that shouldn't have been allowed to use tools. Both heads were warped. I did the 220 wet sandpaper on glass sand them flat thing as is posted in our tech section. They came out nice and work just fine. :beerchug:

Oak 01-03-2015 07:15 PM

Or just replace it for $200 if you don't want to mess with it.

J-Mech 01-03-2015 07:25 PM

Either solution is good. I don't know if the Vanguard heads are as bad about dropping valve seats as the Kohlers are or not. If the valve train is worn out, and they are warped, replacement is probably the best way to go.

Planing them works fine if they are just warped.

Like I said, they aren't known to warp like the flat heads are, but it can happen. CI 350 Chevy heads aren't known to warp very often either but I've seen that more than a few times. My point is, you can pull 10 flat heads, and 10 OHV's. All the flat heads will be warped, and maybe 2 of the OHV's will be.

Sam Mac 01-03-2015 07:31 PM

Well it's easy to check them for being flat. Then you can decide what to do. In my case since the budget for this engine was "0" it was an easy decision, we have sandpaper and glass so they got done. The engine now lives in my pressure washer. Beats the old pull start Tecumseh.:biggrin2:

BassBlaster 01-03-2015 10:08 PM

Thanks guys.

Let me get this thing replaced and then we'll tear into it again!
