Also, a couple of the head bolts were basically finger tight. Not sure which came first, but neither one is good.

Someone mentioned improved head gaskets for these. I can't seem to find anything other than what these look like. None with fire rings. Those are just for the CH25 and bigger it seems. I get P/N KH-24-841-01-S from everything I can find and nothing that's been superseded.

Just my 2 cents, but I'd stick a new seal in it behind the flywheel while you have it opened up. :beerchug:

And thus started the great seal replacement debate of 2018 :biggrin2:

Not the worst idea. It's pretty oily, but that seems to be mostly from the head gaskets spitting oil everywhere.

Haven't pulled flywheel yet, but was planning on it before I buttoned her back up.

Yes I agree... the Commands and Mag twins seem to have issues with the crank seals when they get some age.. K series not so much!

Gompers 10-04-2018 10:03 PM

Tore it down as far as I'm going to.
Replaced the front seal (it was leaking a little).
Trued the heads. They weren't that bad. just a low spot where the gasket had blown.
Started cleaning. It's going to take a while.

Think I have all the parts I need on the way or in hand. It needed a couple of exhaust studs, a new linkage spring (the small one ), 2x head gasket kits and general maintenance items (air filter, oil filter, plugs etc) so far.

Haven't decided if I'm going to tear the carb apart yet. It looked pretty clean and everything was free. No varnish-y gas in the lines or anything. Not that hard to pull off back in the tractor.

Don't see any other major issues with it. Pretty confident It'll just fire up.

Gompers 10-06-2018 09:05 PM

Got her running tonight.

Cleaned for what seems like forever, but every part, fastener and piece of tin was clean when I put it back together. Put the new head gaskets on, got it all back together, new oil and filter, new plugs, put an older car battery in that I had sitting around. It fired right up as soon as I hit the key after putting a little fuel in the carb. Ran it off a gas can until I checked the gas tank, which was very clean. Poured some gas in and it started right up again and ran pretty darn good. No smoke.

Still need to adjust the carb on it I think, but there isn't much to mess with on it. Runs great at WOT. Just a little stumbly at idle. Is that a characteristic of these motors? Might have low idle set a little low too. Didn't get around to that. Overall, very nitpick-y things.

As far as the rest of the tractor, the hydro is basically silent, smooth and seems to work great. Quietest hydro I've had. Makes me wonder if the rest of my tractors have issues now. The power steering seems perfect. Lift works from what I can tell. No leaks (that I've noticed, yet...).

Drove it around a little too. Yard is wet so I've been trying to keep off of it. This thing is a whole new level of nice. I'd say about the same as going from a narrow frame to a 782.

Before I did all that, Pulled off the 54 GT and power washed it and the tractor. That's not a very fun job when it's 46 degrees out. The deck has shed most of the paint on top, and had one spindle slightly stuck. Got it freed up and they all spin ok now, but obviously need to be gone through. It seems to be structurally sound. Just wanted to get grass off it before the winter and hopefully stop it from getting any worse before I decide what to do with it for next year.

So, overall, I have about $350 in this thing, for what seems like a pretty awesome tractor.

CubDieselFan 10-06-2018 10:01 PM

Awesome that it runs good. You have a great tractor.

I love my 2084 and love hearing these stories of bringing these machines back from the dead. I found the Command series very easy to work on and light weight compared to a Mag or KT series twin. Keep up the good work. The 54GT deck will give a lovely cut when leveled and blades are sharpened and true.

I gotta day, it is a very nice machine. If ccc had stuck with metal hoods, and beefed up the rear a bit, this thing would have been flawless.

I don’t think this one was close to dead. Just maybe a bit of flu.

I’ve got more than a few mag/KTs around. I like them a lot, but these are definitely easier in a lot of ways. And the packaging in the tractor is a lot nicer too.

Been mowing this year with a 48GT and it does a very nice job.

Anyone have an idea what this is? It came off in the trailer. I’m assuming it’s probably part of the deck since that was the only really rusty thing, but I don’t see any obvious places on it where it is missing from.

DieselDoctor 10-07-2018 01:01 PM

A job well done! Enjoy your new toy now that's it's up and running.

My guess is that it's the chute stop.

That sure looks like it. Thanks Sam.

Found my idling/stumbling problem. I had the fuel hose pinched a little between the pump and the carb where it passes under the air cleaner housing. Starts, idles, runs like a champ now. Not even a hint of a stumble.

Mostly just cosmetics to fix now. Brakes need adjusted. I have a taillight out too.

Love my 82 series tractors, but this is an improvement in almost every way.

J-Mech 10-07-2018 02:36 PM

How did a pinched fuel hose give it a stumble at idle, but yet run fine at WOT, when more fuel is required?

Yes... they are awesome tractors! You are spoiled now!! The P/S on my 1782 has ruined me!:biggrin2::biggrin2:

My guess is that since it's a vaccuum fuel pump, it did more pumping when the engine was running faster and it was enough overcome the restriction. Started it up this morning and it wouldn't keep running unless you had it throttled way up. rerouted the hose and it idled fine. :HeadScratch:

Mostly tore down the 54GT it came with. It seems ok but enough bearings were gacked I just ordered a whole new set along with seals. Gonna do a preservative/functional paint job on it to keep it as an option for the spring.

Figured I could slap the 48GT from my 782 onto it and do a bit of mowing/leaf chopping yet this fall. Also wanted to get a couple decent heat cycles on the engine and re-check head bolts.

Got the deck hung and hooked up. It’s got the small pulley on it from being mounted on the 782 so it spins the deck a little faster than it’s supposed to.

Tractor ran perfect. This thing is a monster with that deck. Ran it at about 80% throttle even. Maybe a function of bigger tires or a little more weight or power steering, but it’s a silky smooth ride.

Definitely the most comfortable to operate cub I’ve got. Almost too comfortable.

Time to service the hydro and double check the bolts in the rear, but this one is definitely going to stick around.

Nice work i wish i ever could get that lucky on a non runner lol.

Just finished a refresh of the deck.

Rebuilt all three spindles, new idler pulley, a good cleaning, rust converter, red oxide and a coat or three of (cheapish magic) paint.

Good enough for a worker.

The deck is nice and quiet and kills leaves with a passion. Super happy with how this turned out.

Now to get a blower on it...my cub fund keeps getting set back when new toys come around.

CubDieselFan 10-27-2018 08:13 PM

You did good. That super looks great.

DieselDoctor 10-27-2018 08:25 PM

Nice work! Looks like you found one that, with a little love, is now a great tractor. Deck looks good too!

Deck isn’t in great shape, but it’s mostly sound. Rusted through in a couple of spots that I welded ugly patches in to fix. I figure if I keep it clean, as much as I mow with it it’ll be good for another 10-15 years though.

jaynjeep 10-27-2018 11:55 PM

you did well! Looks like a really nice working machine now!:beerchug::beerchug:

Ready to blow snow!

Looking forward to the white stuff coming down. Probably ought to get some chains for it. Loaded the tires with 10 gal each of washer fluid, though, and that seemed to make it a lot more stable with that heavy bastard of a blower hanging off the front of it.

guyina4x4 11-25-2018 11:09 PM

very nice, what blower is that?

I picked up a 2084 about a year ago, engine was in the same shape as yours, both head gaskets blown and needed both coils and a fuel pump. PO litterly drove into the grave.
you got a much better deal than I did, I paid a little over $400 for mine with no deck or anything.

I really like mine, that power steering is awesome.
I'm currently doing some "upgrdes?" to mine

It's a 451.

Good news is that it's pretty easy to work on.

They are pretty awesome machines. I love my 82 series tractors, but it's really hard to not want to use this thing most of the time.

I need to take a look at the trunion on this one. That job might wait until spring. Will probably put a set of super braces on it at the same time.

Loaded tires make a HUGE difference no matter what you are doing with it... Here in the south we load them just to cut grass.. makes a big difference when mowing off camber or just turning around.. The braces will also stiffen the tractor considerably.. Looks great!:beerchug:
