Lewis-
If you plan on doing anything other than mowing with that 582, you need a stronger spring. The 582 will slip a new clutch with an OEM spring under a hard pull. I would also not reuse a used OEM spring, regardless of what tractor it is in. They get weak after awhile. |
Well, the 124 hasn't been idling right. I assume it's a clogged carb, or head gasket.
So, I rebuilt the carb (it was time anyway). Found a nasty blowby.....filed the carb, and block straight and reinstall. Still, poor idle...but it came and went. Did, points, condensor, plug, and wire. No change. Then I noticed the pos wire to the coil was cracked bad...so, made a new wire. I've got it idleing for awhile, sounds alright, then I decide to brakecleaner all the gaskets, just to check. The carb is good, clean the block and points cover, still good. Hit the head, and the rpms shot up. Darn, I was praying it wasn't a head gasket. I pulled the head off, it was a 2" long blowby where the exhaust valve is. I look at the clock....the local place closes in 15 minutes. Well, atleast I figured it out.....and rebuilt everything else along the way. These things happen when machines run right for a long time. I ignore the clues, and get lazy. But the 122 purrs like a kitten....even starts with the throttle on idle after a little choke. |

Sounds like you are getting a lot of the little things fixed as you go :beerchug: Hopefully a new head gasket will make it good as new  |

There was some talk on another post about cleaning and waxing versus painting. It got me to thinking, so today was very nice out, I took the rear fender seat pan for the 128 out and washed it up, then used the fine grit compound first followed up with a wax/cleaner combo. Yep I think I will just leave the yellow at least original. The paint is really thing tho in several spots. Will still give paint a consideration, but in reality, it would probably be ok for many years. It will primarily be a run around tractor for the trailer, yard sweeper and maybe the brinly plow. Hoping to get my motor finished up in a couple of weeks, or at least very close to being done. Am so glad spring and green is here again. Is good for the soul. :beerchug:

Yesterday I repainted the outside set of wheel weights on the 1450. They had a few scratches on them from the tire chain tightening straps. I bolted them back on today and took it for a quick spin around the yard. This was the first time I drove it since installing 4 Heim Joints. I tell you guys one thing, it isn't power steering but darn close!!

I got a chance today to work on the 582 I picked up last Sunday.Drained out the 2 1/2 qts of oil and gas.Rebuilt the carb,it was a little different rebuilding a briggs one but not difficult.A thick piece of paper was all I needed to get the fuel pump back together.Put it all back together and it fired right up.
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah There goes that guy with all the cubs down the street, heheheheh Still gotta figure out what is wrong with the shifter... Matt,I have an old red spring laying around, seems to be an 1/8"longer than the stock one.Any input would be appreciated. Jude. A friend of mine who is a machinist does most of the work for me.gratis |
Lewis-
Get a 5/8" locking collar to put behind the red spring, compress it 3/4" which is about 650 lbs. That's enough to hold 16 hp and not much more pedal force than the OEM spring. |
