Question::: I'm going to look at a 100 (http://burlington.craigslist.org/grd/1769512360.html) on tuesday, he wanted $200 and he agreed to $150. It's going to take a lot of parts to restore this one, is it worth it???? |
It takes a lot of parts to restore any tractor right. The 100 I redid last year was worse than that, and it turned out alright.

Stellar 100!!

I had an engine from another 100 that I parted because basically everything but the rear and engine were shot. The engine had water in it, which froze and broke the pan and cracked the oil dipper on the rod. I rebuilt it and it was fine.

PTO Button
1 Attachment(s)
This may not be so much a "What did I do with" as it is a "What did I do FOR" my Cub...
This evening I turned out a new PTO center button for a Pto that has one worn down to nothing. Probably hard to tell from the pic but, I don't think it came out too bad for a first effort. |
Got some seat time in today. Our Sycamore tree has started shedding it's bark for the year. Here's some pics. :beerchug:

How does that sweeper work? Do you like it? I thought about buying one.
|
Pat,
The sweeper works great, it even picks up pine straw. Never had any problems with it. It's the Craftsman 42" hi speed. |
Well, Today I mowed with the TG1860 (Kubota, sorry :'( ) Then fired up the ol' gall, and started spraying, Went threw 3 tanks (15 Gal.) She ran like a charm. filled up the 4th, then went back to spray, and danget, nothing, I had been having trouble with the pump all day, not giving enough pressure at first, then WAY to much pressure, then, nadda zipp zilch. Then again, she was probably 10 years old. She had a good life.
So, needlest to say, I'm going get another pump next week, But the Cub's running like a champ. I'd post some pics, but can't find the camera, I think i left it at the camp..... Gonna hear from mom on that one. :beatdeadhorse: Thanks Cody |

If you get a sweeper, you won't regret it.

Heck since the Snapper in down I've cutting it with the Push mower!! I will have to look into a sweeper. |
I fired up the 982 & tiller to chew up some sod to level out an area to install a fire ring. I was a bit concerned about moving the ring, but once I got it stood up, it rolled nicely up the hill about 100'. I had my wife 'handy' when I layed it down and all is well.

Out for a ride

Got a chance to take the little guy for a ride now that I got the 1914 up and running. We had a blast just driving around the yard!

Glad you got the 1914 running. Thanks for the nice pics! :beerchug:

Glad to hear you got the fire ring moved without any problems:ThumbsUp: super1914 Cool pictures of you and your little guy :beerchug: |
I pumped out the gas tank, removed it, and cleaned it. Then, cleaned out the fuel lines, shop vac'ed the dirt around the motor / steering area. It began to starve for fuel this past Friday and this morning was the first opportunity I had to track the problem. The Ox Was in the Ditch! Thankfully, it's all better now!

I pulled the 3-point off my 782D to fix what I thought was broken, and it turns out there was nothing broken at all...just some play in the rockshaft. I put the bagger blades on the 46" deck, greased the spindles, and cleaned and greased the wheels on the deck. I washed and waxed it while it was nice and sunny, and it's much shinier now. I made the little bracket we've been discussing in another thread that is supposed to increase the lift height of the mower deck. I haven't tried it yet, as I'm removing slop from the front axle and installing new Heim joints in place of all of the worn tie rod ends. I also put the thrust bearing in the steering gearbox, and I've discovered that something is binding in the gearbox, so I guess that's coming out tomorrow:bash2: I need to finish my IH tiller/Cat-0 adapter for this soon so I can cross one more project off the list.

Got some plant food made up for one of my 6 gardens. I water this way too because for me, it is eazier than to hook up all my hoses, drag them out and then put away. And its just that much more fun for some seat time!

Not much posting last couple of days. So.....
What did I do with my Cub today? Well, nothing - too hot. But Sunday I changed out the carburetor on 104 number 2 (I have two 104s) and now it runs great. It has a 3 point hitch on it, and I'm going to either make or find a helper spring. I have a line on a box blade, new - never has touched the ground, for $50. I'm going to buy it and this 104 will become my box blade tractor. It and my 123 with the snow blade, will see some ground moving action. I have a 122 and the other 104 as my mowing machines. A 2135 that I probably will sell or it will be my trim mower. Another 2135 that has a busted transmission, but I have one in SB, Indiana that I need to go get. A 125 that I will probably sell and a 123 that needs an engine that's for sale also. |

Yesterday I pulled the steering column out of my 782D to go through it. It had always steered kind of hard, and the addition of V61 front tires amplified it. I removed, disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled it. The top bearing balls were fine, but the bottom ones were lightly pitted, so I replaced the balls with new ones from McMaster-Carr that I bought last year. I also added the Nice 605 thrust bearing. I then replaced all of the badly worn tie rod ends with new Heim joints, and adjusted the toe-in. It steers much easier now, and the wheel centers itself when I let go, so the toe-in must be pretty close. I'm also finishing the IH tiller adapter for this, so I'll update that thread tomorrow.

I've been helping dad put up a new fence with the 2544 while he's on vacation, it's a great fence stretcher/puller/hound dog attractor... :biggrin2.gif:

Great pics! Glad the 2544 was up to the task. :beerchug:

Nice work, GC! Good to see that hitch earning it's keep!;)

Great job, GC!
Man, I love those tires!! Jeff (teet) |

Did some mowing today with the 782D and 1872...I like mowing with the super...
The 1872 still needs some carb and hydro linkage adjustments. The bagger on the 782D also works a lot better with the bagging blades on the deck, but man, does that thing pull hard. This is the first time I've gotten it to smoke with a deck. The steering is also MUCH better now that I went through the steering box and added the heim joints and Nice 605 bearing. It's almost power steering. Setting the correct toe-in also made it much easier to steer since the wheel now re-centers when I let go. |
Well today I thought I would do a close inspection of the 128 and see what could be adjusted and what needed replacing. I pulled the front wheels off of the spindles and checked out the bearing inserts and put some grease into them. I cleaned off the old grime from the spindles and arms, checked all of the drag link ends for play, all were tight including the two ends on the main steering arm from the steering box. As I had mentioned in another post I thought a pulley on the mule drive was going bad, due to smelling burned grease and some smoke from front end while mowing yesterday, but each pulley spun with no problem and neither one had any type of play between the bearing and the shaft. The PTO released and engaged great no adjustments there. Crawled under the tractor and removed the belly pan so I could get to the steering shaft easier. I loosened the cam follower and turned it 1/4 of a turn in case there was some wear on it which I am pretty sure there is. I then tightened the nut to tighten the swivel plate a bit more and locked down the lock nut. Then pumped some grease into the unit. Much Much better steering now. Also greased the spindle king pins. The only other thing I could find that had me concerned was the clutch. No play of the drive shaft back and forth from front to rear at all. But if you grab the clutch disc you can pull it up and move it around just a bit, the shaft end that looks as if it goes into the pulley next to the debris screen had some movement. Also the four holes that allowed the pegs to come thru the clutch disc seemed to be elongated allowing the disc to rotate a bit back and forth, is this normal or are the holes worn out?
This was about all I could stand to do today, as the humidity was about 98% and my back was screaming at me to give up. Anyone have an idea of why I am getting a grease smell and some continuous smoke out from the front underside of the tractor by the front wheel. Since it doesn't appear to be a pulley I am stumped. Thanks DWayne :American Flag 1: |

That's fairly normal for the clutch to wear like that, but it'll never have axial play unless something is horribly broken. I would try to wiggle it side to side or up and down; if it moves too much in either of those directions, the pilot bushing in the 3-pin driver is worn. It sounds like you have checked for this. For about $140, you can rebuild the clutch and not have to touch it again for 30 years. It is money well spent if you plan on keeping the tractor. I used to have a 128, and it was a great tractor. I've attached a picture.
If the smoke is coming from the left side of the tractor, it's probably coming out of the crankcase breather. This could be stuck or worn rings, or the breather might be assembled improperly or dirty. Most of these engines (or at least the ones I've had) smoke a bit from the breather, yet still have a ton of power and don't consume oil excessively. |
Thanks Matt, I will probably re do the clutch this winter when everything is nasty outside. I for sure have to build clutch spring compressor that you designed first. I didn't think about a breather. I need to look at it then. I know my grandmother said the mower uses a bit of oil, the engine feels very strong still as old as it is, worn rings sound about right. I guess to do it right I should have it mic'd and then bored if needed with a new piston and rings. Looks like I will have a few things to do starting around Nov. :)

well, i didn't get any seat time on mine today due to the fact that it has been incapacitated for a few months now. but i did tear into it a little and found that my coil is shot. so i need to buy a new coil and coil wire and spark plug. that might be the reason why it wont start. i replaced the voltage regulator, a new key switch and soon ill have a new wiring harness on it. as well as my newly rebuilt starter generator. so hopefully ill be able to start it on its own without the jumpers and be able to use the lights on the 122. also i found a Haban 401B sickle bar for $200 im going to pick up so i can mow my ditch instead of string trimming it. good day today
