Yes, when all that is holding the plug together is the boot on the spark plug wire it's probably time for a new one!
It always kind of amazes me how people try to stretch the life of spark plugs. If you can't put a few bucks into making your engine run well you better not complain about skips or hard starts. |

Today I removed the CV joint for the steering on the 2284 to clean out the original grease and repack it with fresh grease. This is a fairly simple job anytime the engine is out of the tractor. Remove the battery tray, steering wheel, boot over the steering column, the snap ring that keeps the bronze bushing from sliding down the column and the bolt through the bottom of the CV joint. The CV joint should now slide up off of the steering valve or steering box. The joint has 4 allen head blots holding it together, remove these and the joint will come apart. Clean the old grease out, repack and reassemble in the reverse order. Also fixed the plug to the ignition switch while I was in the area. The battery tray will get the rust cleaned off and some new paint. Also replaced the crossover fuel line at the top rear of the fuel tank. The ignition switch is pretty nasty so I’m going to replace that also while it’s easy to get at.:beer2:

Sam, any thoughts of adding front hydraulics while you are at it?

The 1882/2282 & 2284 will be for sale as soon as I'm finished with them. I doubt that I'd be able to recoup the cost of front hydraulics. As it is not many people will be willing to pay what I will have into these two tractors even though it won't be that much more that what TSC gets for a Cub lawn mower. The only one of the 3 that I'm going to keep is the 2182 and that's only because I think it's cool with the Kubota gas engine. Even at that it will get almost no use. I mow about 6 acres and this is what I use, I call it the grassanator. The hitch has been improved since that pic was taken. Kills grass fast. :biggrin2: |
Cool setup!
I guess you would need something like that to mow 6 acres! That's alot of yard! |
Very nice, Sam! Thanks for showing us your pics.

Sam MAC let me know when your ready to sell. I live in the Galax area also.....hard to find supers around here. Especially ones in good shape.

Your welcome to come and take a look and pick the one you want. At the moment you can also see them with the sheet metal off so you can see everything. Sam |

The 2284 got it's new engine installed today. Took it for a little test spin. Sitting on the gas tank is not the most comfortable thing in the world. LOL Now I'm waiting for the sheetmetal to get painted and a new muffler. Should have it pretty well done by the end of next week. The muffler that's on it at the moment won't clear the hood. Just put it on for testing. Time for a cold one. :beerchug::beer2:
|
Sam,
Would the muffler clear if the inlet pipes did not curve up? Or is it just too wide for the side panels as well. I have an exhaust guy who can modify the inlet pipes for me. |
Frank
It's too wide also. I was going to cut it up and try to make it work but I also need to deal with a heat shield or risk cooking the plastic so I'm going to keep it all stock. It looks like the muffler will work in a steel hood and I just happen to have a CH22 that will be looking for a home as soon as I finish these 3. I'd like to find a 982 roller. Looks like I'll have sheet metal tomorrow for all 3, my painter just finished the paint work. I love it when a plan comes together.:biggrin2: |
Looks great Sam! you've been making great progress on these!

Had a fun day today, Plummcrazy 1864 stopped over to check out the two Supers that I will have for sale. Very COOL guy turns out he lives about 3 miles from me. Got my tin back and installed it on the 1882 & 2284. Hope to do the 2182 tomorrow then about all that's left is the muffler and I need to get a heat shield made for the 2284. Still waiting for 1 gage for the 2182. Weather has been wild here today, even had tornado warnings. I'll try to get some pics tomorrow of the kids with the new piant. Time for a cold one and see what's going on in the Na$crash world. :beerchug:

Yep, it was good meeting you and talking cubs today. You have a real nice place and I hope we can get together and do it again.......talked with the wife not as bad I thought:Pray::

Got some time to work on the 1882/2282 today. Waiting for my welder buddy to make me a heat shield for the muffler and gotta get some new decals but other than that the tractor is just about done. :beerchug:
|
Your super looks great, Sam!

Yep, looks great Sam, I do hate the plastic on the Supers but I will say one thing, unless you have used one or owned one they are in a league of there own.
|
I would have no problem with that being parked in my shop. Looks great. :beerchug:

The 1882 was the ugly one of the 3, it still needs to have the hood fixed or replaced. The PO drilled through the hood and bolted it to the hinge. It may be reparable and it needs new decals. Then it will look pretty good. The engine swap from the Mag18 to the CH22 turned out good. I had to get a little creative with the cooling because of the shape of the firewall for the 1882, I had an old firewall and the plastic bellows that they use on the 2160’s so I cut the 2160 fire wall up and combined it with the one for the 1882 so that it wont be sucking hot air back around the engine. I’ll post some pics of that next time I have the side covers off.

Got the heat shield today for the 1882/2282. Welder did a great job. I decided to have him make me one more so that I have one to copy should one of us need one in the future. :biggrin2:
|
He did a great job on the heat sheild!:beer2:

Your heat shield looks awesome!
|
Did you give him a drawing to work off of? If so, great job by you in laying it out for him, great job by him in accurately fabricating the piece. What gauge steel, looks fairly heavy in the pictures, maybe 16 gauge?
|
Dave
It's 14GA. I gave him the one from the 2284 to use as a template. Reason I'm having him make an extra is that it is NLA and the CH22 repower for the Mag18's is pretty much a bolt in. About all that you need to change is the drive shaft, muffler and drill the motor plate for the new engine. My guess is that sooner or later one of the guys in this group will need a heat shield. The welder put all the cutting info into his computer controlled plasma cutter so he can burn the steel in a couple minutes for one. I'll keep the spare as a master for future builds. :beerchug: |

The muffler for the 2284 came in today so I put it and the new heat shield on along with the hood. Rode it around the yard, sweet tractor, gonna hate to let this one go. :beerchug:

Things are looking good in the Sam Mac neighborhood. That sure is a pretty looking machine. There is just something about those supers.
|
Great looking super, Sam!
|
Looks great Sam!
I just have to ask what is that sticking through one of the front port holes. |

Changed the tranny fluid and filter on the 1882 today. Pulled the rear cover to make sure every thing was in good condition. Added a vent to the case sort of like JD did on the 317's. Easy job when you have the cover off and it sure helps filling it.:beerchug:
|
Nice job, Sam! Great talking to you the other day!
|
Sam, is the vent a barb connection for tubing? Hard to see in the picture. How do you cover it when in use?
|
Dave
The fitting is a 1/8" pipe to 1/4" hose fitting to a hose to the small gas filter to some more hose, up and over the seat support and zip tied to the fill tube. It stays open all the time. The newer hydros have a vent on the top of the case. Filter keeps the dirt out. Easy and cheap. :biggrin2: |
Looks good Sam! I like the vent idea, I know it was a pain when I had to fill up the 1811, ended up unscrewing the fill tube and used a funnel. Do I spy some red IH hardware on the right axle:biggrin2: LOL
|
"Do I spy some red IH hardware on the right axle:biggrin2: LOL"
Ben I think a PO may have borrowed the 3 PT that was on this tractor and put an IH bolt in it, any idea who that would be?:bigthink: |

Finished the 2282 today. Got the decals from Maple Hunter and big thanks to Rich Patton for the new hood. Nice working with people that deliver as they say they will. :beerchug:
|
Great job on the 2282, Sam! I like it!
|
Sam, I'm not sure which I like less about you - how nice you make a tractor look, or how neat you keep your shop. Makes me feel kind of useless! Could you at least have a few allen wrenches, some rags, and a can of PB Blaster on the floor next to the tractor so it looks lived in!
Say what you like about plastic hoods, these cyclops supers are just very capable, very comfortable, very easy driving tractors. The fact that they didn't make a 3000 series super means these are likely the last of the breed. |
