All steel disks.... that's interesting. Bet that thing engages with a bang. What a poor design.

I would definitely get the oil baffle. Go order it now.

Any hydraulic transmission oil will work fine. It doesn't have to be IH, or Cub Cadet or even necessarily "name brand" oil. I use a hy-tran from O'Reilly's in my tractors.

Ok so we have a new problem. When we started putting all the gears and shafts back together. There is a problem with them lining up. In the drawning I've included. The big gear 21 that has the pto shaft running thru it should line up with the upper gear 26. The problem is that the big 21 gear moves forward about 3/16" to much and gets in to gear 29. I purchased a new PTO shaft 9 thinking maybe it was worn and that's why it slid in to far. But not the case the new shaft still does the same. Apparently this tractor has been worked on before and they met the same problem because they tried putting some thin metal shims between gears 21 and 23. The PTO shaft 9 has snap ring groves on both sides of the shaft where maybe gear 21 should ride but no spacers or snap rings are shown in drawing to order. Bearings 51 and snap ring 14 are in side of gear 23. Anyone got any ideas?

Well, something has to hold that gear onto the shaft where it rides on the splines...... I agree, there is no call out in the parts to show a snap ring, but I'd say there is supposed to be one. How about in the service manual? Does it show or state one in there? Either way, I think I'd put two on it and see if it will all fit together with a snap ring. On that style of shaft, it would likely be this style of ring:

If seems maybe the PTO shaft might be used for other models because installing clips would not help stabilize these gears. So our new question is it normal for a PTO shaft to be able to move in and out about 3/16"? If we find some shims or washers to take up the slack of the gears the shaft will still slide in and out about that amount. We are at the point of refilling with fluid and putting the cover back on but sure hate to with that much play and slack without knowing if that is normal for this model. Thanks for any help.

He hasn't been on the site since 8/23/17. 4 days after he made that last post.

If I had to guess...... he got it together. But, the way the project went, he may have counted his losses and chucked it. Maybe he took our advice and sold the tractor as soon as he got it together. Who knows. :Unknown:

Try sending him a PM. Maybe he will get an email notification and respond to you.

New Member With 7264 PTO Problem

Hey: Thanks for allowing me to post. Just bought Cub 7264 about five months ago. In beautiful condition. Started up last week to pre-flight for season. Has 3 cylinder Daihatsu diesel. Electric PTO switched on dash panel. My PTO doesn't want to engage to drive the 60" deck. The handle on the left doesn't seem to have any detent positions. Just wants to slide up and down the slot. When I first tried, it screeched but did not engage. Didn't do anything else after that as don't want to make things worse. There are two shafts going from the linkage into the transmission. When I move the lever, they do move a little (+- 3/4") in static position. Is there preliminary checks anyone could suggest? Thanks. I may also need a PTO as before here but don't know more than that.
