In the garden today with the 123/tiller

I spent a lot of the day today in the garden. I pulled out the 123 and #1 tiller and planted 4 rows of green beans, then a row of turnips. Might get to do more tomorrow..... looks like the forecast storms skirted to the south of us, so maybe it'll still be dry in the garden tomorrow.

Great work on the garden looks nice!

CC1450 04-19-2011 09:24 PM

now that is the way to do it, beats turning over a garden by hand any day.

I like that rainwater collection setup you have there, that is pretty slick.

nra1ifer 04-19-2011 09:28 PM

Thanks, guys. You'd be amazed how fast those barrels will fill up, just off the shed roof! I hope to get a couple of 275-gal. "totes" soon to catch water off of the house roof.

Very nice, the 123 & tiller look great. Garden worked up nice - got any plans for sweet corn in it as well? Your lucky you were able to be in your garden. If I stepped in my garden now I'd sink about 5 inches or more into the sloppy mud. SO MUCH water laying around here. If I drove the cub into the garden I might never see it again until July.

Mooner 04-19-2011 09:33 PM

Oh man, am I jealous! It's been raining so much here in Buckeye Land, just can't get out to do much at all. Your 123 and tiller look great, too! I've not used my tiller yet, since I just got it in December, but can't wait to put it to work. You really have a nice size garden and the soil looks well-prepped. Do you plow it first or just use the tiller? Also, how do you transport the water from the rain barrels? :bouncy:

_DX3_ 04-19-2011 09:34 PM

That does it, I will have a tiller next year, LOL :biggrin2:

zippy1 04-19-2011 09:35 PM

Looks like great fun!
Looking forward to getting my 123 and #1 tiller in the garden for it's maiden run, one problem though, right now we're getting between 6"-10" of the white stuff:angry:

I'll be skipping the sweet corn this year.
Wife found out that corn products make her body HURT. Although I LOVE sweet corn (she does, too!!), I'll make it easy on her and not even plant any.

Last year at this time, the garden spot was saturated from LOTS of rain. So far this year, we've had regular, frequent rains. None of those toad-stranglers!!

I plow it fall and spring, then go over it with an Agri-Fab cultivator. Once I'm ready to plant some rows, I'll bring out the 123/tiller.

(I just haul the water in 5-gal. buckets. Some day, I'll rig up a pump to be able to send the water up the hill through a hose.)

I bought that 123/tiller last summer specifically for making the tilling easier. Since then, I've fallen in LOVE with the old Cubs!

Great pics! These old tillers do a great job and they make tilling your and your friends gardens so enjoyable. Adds to the seat time too!

The garden and soil look fantastic! Maybe you could use an old sump pump and find a long length of old, used pool hose to irrigate your garden. Hauling buckets of water to the garden reminds of what I did in the family garden years ago. I had to have it all done by the time my dad got home from work. We also had an old Fraser rototiller that was just awesome, but I never got to use it...was stuck using the Western Auto front tine tiller. :Boohoo:

I onlly use the tiller in the spring to prep the soil. bury it until the back flap is even with the ground, and let it push you through the garden. When I'm done I can stand where I tilled, and not see my boots. awsome tool.

Not a bad idea (sump pump). I'll keep my eyes open for one. You know what I'd REALLY like???? A windmill!!!

That's how I do it, too (back flap). It's amazing how it works the soil. If you mis-step, you end up with dirt over the top of your boots! This 123 and it's tiller are one of my favorites!

Here's another bonus.... I found out this afternoon that if I arrange things right, I can get the 123 stored in the shed WITH the tiller attached. Now I don't have to wrestle with it each time I want to use it. Makes it nice when I'm finished for the day, good and tired...... don't have to take the tiller off to store it!

Windmill....great idea! I always keep a spare sump pump around just in case....you never know when that switch is gonna puke itself.

Nice looking garden. I'd love to see that kind of weather around here. Your 123 looks awesome with that tiller on the back of it. The 122 and 123 are my favorites.:beerchug:

mharrison 04-20-2011 11:03 PM

That's an awesome setup. I've been looking for a tiller for my 100. Only thing holding me back is the price I see them going for. You're lucky, here in Oh we been getting TONS of rain and supposed to get even more Tstorms for the next couple of week according to the news.:bash2:

Nice 123 and Tiller!

AMCJavelin74 04-21-2011 08:40 AM

Right now I use an old 4hp Toro (one with a cast iron gearbox) front tine unit, it walks all around the yard (It 'walks' around the yard and sort of reminds me of a mechanical zombie) but for what it is, it does a pretty good job. I just want either a plow+disc+cultivator or a tiller for my CC. Luckily I'm not any older than I am (25) as it feels like it's going to rip my arms off.

Im new to this forum and to Cub Cadets. Although, I've been a fan all my life.

I just bought my first cub, a 122. Very excited.

I don't know all there is to know just yet, but was wondering if all that is required for such a tiller is a sleeve hitch? Im assuming that tiller is belt driven with the same belt that normally would drive a deck?

Thanks!

Good lookin 123 by the way.

tiller talk

That sure looks like fun with the cub and tiller combo.
Question for the CUB experts? I have a tiller, some pictures here, is it worth saving? Sorry the picture are not real good it was raining. It rolls over but has been setting out for a long time. It is rusty but looks to be complete. Tines have some wear too. If you think it could be saved then on to the next questions.
Where could I find the lower gear box for running one of these. And approx how much would that cost?
I was thinking I might take the upper lift pivot and bottom bracket off the 127 and put them on the 102?? Would that work? Do I still need more or different hardware to mount one of these? The 102 has a std shift and creeper. I thought that might work good for the tiller?
I do currently have a wheel horse walk behind tiller that I use for the garden. Might be nice to ride and cultivate. Could be a excuse for a bigger garden too.:)
I do have a mold board plow in about the same condition.
Regards,
Chris

Chris if the tines move freely I would use it. My first tiller had no paint on it at all and it worked like a dream! Do 7 garden beds with my tiller and I would never use any other tiller unless it was a pto tiller. It's so nice to sit and run the tiller. Check out this awesome write up Wild Bill made!

For the gear box contact our site sponsers or make a posting in the wanted section of the site. If those fall thru they are on eBay fairly often.

Sugarmaker 05-11-2011 10:22 PM

Duke,
Thanks, I may drag this closer to the garage and take a better look at it. I will not be ready for garden work this spring but might be a good project during the summer.
Regards,
Chris
