Cub Cadet 104: Questions from a New Member -Pics posted
 

First, as a new member, let me say I've enjoyed browsing the site and learning from other members. Second - if this message belongs somewhere else, please steer me in the proper direction.

I may have an option on a 104, located in rural NC, and described pretty much as "runs good". It is reported to have a mower deck, no other options, and no "hitch" on the back.

I'm trying to get down there and have a look at it. Anyone care to tell me what I should look for (and look out for); what questions to ask, etc? Is anyone willing to speculate on a range of possible fair prices - given that I have no really good information yet?

Good luck on the 104.
Does it run? Do all the features function as normal? What do you want to do with it? Hobby tractor? Restoration? Mow grass as is? do work now do work next year? All these can factor into the purchase.

Dont do as I do do as I say! I bought one where nothing worked and have been playing with it for about 4 months now.:) Thread about "added more IH Equip"

Location and condition determin price. In Statesville things are higher then in Midland where theres more cubs (1.5 hr drive). I would say $250-$500 depending on condition.

Thanks for the replies so far. Chris - it's reported to be in good condition and running but I haven't looked at it yet. It's a 10hp as I understand and I'm concerned about adequacy of power. I want it for grass cutting; and if I can get accessories, a blade to push around a little gravel or snow and a tiller attachment for my "small" garden. I'm looking for a worker, not a show-piece. When I had my 122 (which has a 10hp in it) I had enought to do anything I wanted to do. I was able to plow my garden with it. It had good power for running the tiller and the front end loader that was on it. It will do a great job mowing grass.

Never under estimate the power of a single cylinder Kohler. It should do all you could throw at it. :beerchug:

Welcome to the only place on the web for all of your cub cadet needs!! I have a 100 that I plow, drag, pull and push just about anything I want, and there is still plenty left, especially with the creeper.

Just brought the 104 home, put on a new battery, and cut the yard. Love it. Let's see: chickens, vegetable garden, tractor. Not much city left in this old boy.

Have a couple of minor problems, such as I can't get the key out of the ignition switch, so she'll live in the garage for a while.

The first two digits of the tractor number indicate the hp, unless it has been repowered. So a 123 has a 12 hp on it and a 149 has a 14 hp on it, and so on...I plow snow, run a tiller, run a disc etc. with my 73 and it has plenty of power for that.

A set of needle nose plyers might help you to get that stuck key out of the ignition switch, but in all honesty, a small flathead screwdriver will start those old machines!

We're looking forward to seeing some pictures of your cub on the forum.

Still looking for the serial number (I'm "directionally-challenged", as in, I don't follow directions well so I'm still looking for it, despite reading descriptions of where it is supposed to be). Ignition key still stuck, despite gentle probing with a pair of needle-nosed pliers. Blades need sharpening so I'm soon to learn how to take off, clean, and remount the mower deck. It needs a good cleaning and polishing. Bits and pieces appear to be missing or jury-rigged. Will have to download a manual. Is the 70+100 model manual the correct one (it show's lights and I don't have lights)? Here are five pictures taken after I mowed the grass.

Nice looking 104 you have there. I have one myself and it has plenty of power to do mowing, snow plowing, and garden plowing. Mine has lights, spring assist and rear lift but i dont have a creeper gear(yet).

Sweet 104! Congrats! The serial number is on the back of the tractor you'll see a chrome and black tag on the left side of the axle housing. Look for the round plug and it's to the left of it. I can see it on your 4th pic.

Thanks for all the comments and helpful tips. I downloaded the 70-100 series chassis service manual and the operator manual from the technical site and I'm going to start reading. Lots to learn about the nuts and bolts, the accessories; the lingo (took me a while to figure out what 'tri-ribs' were but I'm rolling now!

Dang it. I must have looked at those links a dozen times and seen 1xx4, not 1x4. So I assumed the 100 was the series identifier that I needed, being 3 numbers, not 4. I'm safe to drive the tractor, really, my vision is fine.
