ya, these cryptic posts should only be left to 14 year old girls on facebook! :biggrin2:

:biggrin2: OK OK.... Alright Gary maybe I was a bit misleading, but well that happens... LOL. Long story short, my wife says she saw a cub about a 1/4 mile down the road and it had a for sale sign on it. I drive by and see it is a narrow frame but couldn't see the model number. I thought, hey my nephew needs a good Cub to do chores around his house with. So I called his dad and told him to check it out and that I would do the restore. He calls and wants to know what it is worth if it turns over, I said $150 at most, figuring the guy wants more. Ten minutes later he calls back and say I got it and another small Homelite riding mower for $50. I told him he did great. So he picked it up this afternoon and brought it over to the house to leave here, so I can work on it this winter. Disassemble and motor overhaul. It is a 1971 model 73.
As you all will see, it has some of those awesome PO mods, LOL. Luckily nothing that cannot be removed I think. I do need to see what a battery box for this thing looks like. Also I need to know if the rounded rear fenders are the same as an O or is there a difference? xtrememotorworks makes a nice seat pan fender and fenders for the O. If they fit we will get some to mount up. The plan is to fix all the issues with it, paint it, put duals on the rear and tri ribs on the front, lights and rear lift for a plow. The steering wheel is very loose at the spokes. Will tack welding work or do I need to look for another steering wheel? The deck isn't too bad, but my nephew pulls one of those big pull behind mowers and that is what this 73 will mainly be used for. Oh he is 10 and plans on helping me with the work on "His" tractor. :biggrin2: OK that is enough :BlahBlah::BlahBlah: from me. On to the pics. http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...3/DSC02390.jpg http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...3/DSC02391.jpg http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...3/DSC02397.jpg http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...3/DSC02395.jpg http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...3/DSC02396.jpg There is the original seat pan under this bolted on Crapsman seat. http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...3/DSC02393.jpg http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...3/DSC02398.jpg http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...3/DSC02394.jpg Of course the Big Red Smoker had the duties of hauling everything around :biggrin2: http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...3/DSC02389.jpg |
DWayne....
The original fenders are unique to the original and do not easily mount to the 100 or 70's (70,71, 72, 73...) models, but they can be engineered to fit with the mounting brackets as the shape of the fenders is the same, but the mounting is different. If you are putting on duals, then I wouldn't even bother with the fenders.....but if he is only 10, then it would probably be a good idea so he doesn't get hurt in that respect. I like the look of duals without the fenders (see my original in my profile for pics if interested). Well, that is a sweet deal for that tractor. Can't wait to see the after pics of your work....Thanks for sharing those pics, despite our ribbin' that we gave you! Best regards, Cub Cadet 123 |
They did good! I see they used it to push things with it.:bash2: I've never seen PO fenders that bad before! The extreme fenders are very close to the cubs ones but they are off just a tad but one heck of a improvement over what's on there now.:biggrin2: I'd rather see the super sized air cleaner cover then no cover at all.:biggrin2:
|
Sweet deal! Lucky kid!
I love the narrow frames with the shape of the all cast iron grill. |
Thanks guys, I think it's going to be fun to work on it, but, i haven't gotten into it yet. Plus I have hands like the hulk and narrow frames aren't exactly known for having room to work with, LOL.
|
Love those custom fenders, lol.
That'll be a great project to work on with your nephew! |
Nice find on the 73! Your nephew will love it. :beerchug:
|
I have yet to find a 73.I hope your restoration goes well.
|
very nice score.
|
Awesome Score!!! It was worth the wait. Those fenders are a charm.:biggrin2:
Yeah I do believe it would be easier to retofit the extreme fenders than to fix those. The 73 didn't use the seat pan like the original. It had two brackets to the axel and two bent plates to the frame. Like the 70/100. Good luck and keep us posted with pictures. |
That'll buff out!
Great resto project for the two of you and a great deal! |
Looks like a great winter project . I really like the idea of you getting your 10 year old nephew involved . experience priceless.
|
I just noticed your battery box. It just needs a good coat of paint. ha ha! :biggrin2:
|
Nice find on the 73!
You will get it back in shape in no time Dwayne!:beerchug: |
Thanks for all the comments guys. Yeah I think a lil buffin and hammering and it will look like new..:biggrin2::biggrin2:. If anyone has pics of the rear fender mounts and the battery box I could use some help with that.

http://ccmanuals.info/pdf/70-100%20Fender%20Install.pdf I know I guy that has mounted O fenders on a 100 before. It took some cutting and drilling and using the NF round fender brackets to make them work. Not that I advise cutting up O fenders. |
DWayne could you take a pic of the battery box without the wood on it please. I think all he did was cut the sies off it but can't get a good view of it.
|
I love the F-14 flight yoke on the lift handle.... drive around the yard lifting the deck and shooting sidewinder missiles! :biggrin2:

While I was getting a picture of the battery box I went ahead and removed those hideous PO added rear fenders and found another PO mod to the steering.
http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...3/DSC02407.jpg http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...3/DSC02406.jpg The seat looks pretty rough, don't know if I can straighten this one out or not. Really dented up bad around the sides and rear. http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...3/DSC02399.jpg http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...3/DSC02400.jpg The steering "FIX" http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...3/DSC02401.jpg http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...3/DSC02402.jpg A PO has pryed something up in the creeper slot and slightly messed up the metal. Also is that small hole below the creeper breather hole supposed to be there? http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...3/DSC02409.jpg Starting to look a bit more like a 73 :biggrin2: http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...3/DSC02408.jpg http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...3/DSC02405.jpg |
That seat isn't original, so if you are concerned about originality, I wouldn't worry about straightening it. That extra hole in the tunnel cover is not supposed to be there; that would be easy to weld up, and the creeper slot can be straightened. That air cleaner is wrong, too, BTW.
You could probably drill out the spot welds that hold on the battery box and make a new box. |
DWayne, it's amazing what PO's do to the cubs, over the years.

Yeah, I will weld that hole up then if not needed and get the slot straightened too. I knew as soon as I looked at the air cleaner it was way too BIG, lol. I think Patton Acres has the correct 7hp breather with the base. |
