48 inch deck rebuild

6 Attachment(s)
I got this deck at least 10 years ago with the intentions of cannibalizing it for parts but after getting it home it looked to usable to do that so i slid it on and have been using it ever since. If i want to keep it going it is time to give some much needed attention

new bearings and seals are on order and this will give me a chance to work on the deck itself, am finding it to be severly pitted and thin in spots. time to put my new used mig to work and see if i remember how to use one. been little over 30 years since i used a mig at school. :bigthink:

got all or as much welding done on the deck, metal was pitted so bad i decided to stop the rust with a coating of phosphoric acid, i read it acts like bluing on a gun and is paintable.after this next i will coat the underside with fiberglass resin to seal it. Attachment 17247

How did the welding go?
Those bearings sure are pitted
It ought to be a lot quieter now.

well bearings and seals are on order, in the mean time i decided to coat the inside of the deck with fiberglass resin. i think it did well at giving it a smooth surface to work with so grass and debris will not collect so much also got 98% of the wire brushing and prep work done. i also decided to redo an extra spindle to have on hand as a backup, had an extra cast nose piece that was not chipped like the original and pulley to have. while i have every thing set up may as well paint every thing i have to be ready to put it into service
welding went well but boy did i have to use the wire to make it the way i wanted, it is a solid shell now but i bet i used 3/4 of a 2 pound spool to make it that way

I ain't happy unless I get to weld a couple pounds of rod a week!!

Go back and hit it with some more weld!!

:biggrin2:

Looks good, now we need to see some clippings spray!!

bsyphrit,
The deck and spindle work is coming along nicely! Cant wait to see some paint too. I like the idea that you fiberglassed the underside. That should clean up a lot better too.
Regards,
Chris

well i finally got the parts i ordered and got my new races in the spindles so it is now time for the paint to fly. i did a layer of primer last night followed up today with a top coat of TSC valspar. i know auto paint is the way to go but this will serve my purpose for as long as i will ever run it.

i also had a spare deck with a crappy rattle can job done on it so while i am spraying i did a 2 for 1 deal, i plan to let the paint set for a week before handling since it is starting to snow here and when i am done i will put 1 more coat on the underside of this stuff i have on hand. the closest way i can describe it is kinda like the old ziebart coating that never realy sets up hard, it more or less stays like a hard waxy surface that will not come off unless you are using some form of chemicals.

i know it is a picture overload but i have not poster for a few weeks, glad to get the painting done so cubby can come back inside.:biggrin2:Attachment 18012

bsyphrit,
Wow the deck with the new paint looks great! Very detailed clean work! Thanks for posting. Not a problem on the picture qty. Both decks should be ready to go for spring grass!

Chris

I'm getting inspired! I have two 44Cs that need work! Excellent job! The quality of your rattle-can paint job is so good, I may do that as well!

have to say that was not a rattle can job, i used the TSC valspar at 13 bucks a quart + hardner. the rattle cans go like 6-7 bucks a can, simple math i got the quart. any more if it is not just a touch up i mix up the sprayer.

Looks great! I'm rebuilding my 38in mower. I'm going to use EZ-Slide on the bottom of the mower. I'll see how it works.
