tandem disc harrow project

so i've been wanting to build some thing like this for a while, so I sat down tonight and made up some very crude plans.... dont laugh at my art skills... lol

the plan is to use the two brinley harrows I already have, and build a welded frame using angle iron, or possibly square tube to attach the gangs to... then build the lift mechanism, and using a pulley and cable system to be able to lift the assembly off the ground indirectly using the hydraulic power of the tractor ...

it will be after Christmas im sure before im able to get started, but im itching to get it ready for the garden next year!

let me know your ideas on this design...

I like your drawing/plans. One thing I would change is have a seperate lift system for the disk. The disk will raise or lower when you go over hills or valleys. You could put a T in your Cub hudraulic system or use an electric lift or hydraulic cylinder on the disk.

Let me know if you need someone to bounce suggestions off....be glad to help.

Keep us posted.

i thought about that... ive got some ideas in my head to use some springs to hold the wheels in the up position and to allow some slack to give the tractor some room to pivot with the lay of the land...

id love to do a second hydraulic setup but i was looking at the most time and cost efficient way to get the lift I was after... we will see how it goes. that setup might not even be plausible, but there does need to be some sort of way to lift it off the ground.

Allen,
Nice pictures on your album,
The 14 hp rebuild brings back memories! Nice 149!
Looking forward to the pictures and fab work on the double set of discs.
Regards,
Chris

Instead of hydraulics you could maybe use a linear actuator? Northerntool has them fairly cheap i know, compared to some.

You got hydraulics!! Just hose the hydraulics to a cylinder on the disc!!

Why mess with pulleys?

i need to read up on accessory hydraulics... im not real sharp on them. would it be very difficult? i know cylinders aren't real expensive... i even have a parts 149 with a cylinder and lines and what not....

what all is involved with it ?

Are these going to be so heavy that you could not just make them a mounted set and lift the whole unit, instead of tires, or are you after a "look"?

Chris

This is going to be an interesting thread to follow! :beerchug:

Looks Good

Very nice looking set up, Allen. Do you have specs figured out yet. Looking at the picture, thinking you can close the gap between front and rear set of discs. Like I said though there are no measurements so I can't tell how far apart they are. I will sure keep an eye on this project , because I think you have a great idea. One that will have to be copied. I'm in need of one myself.

im not sure what kind of weight im after, but I would like them to dig well with out having 20 center blocks stacked on the back.

the wheel lift is partly just for the cool factor.. lol
