Cub Cadet 1782 Super Garden Tractor Diesel
Hey fellas, have a look at this ad:
http://ontario.kijiji.ca/c-ViewAd?Ad...n=email_alerts I've been doing some reading here and from what I've found, the 1782's seem to be problematic. Is this really the case? How far out of line is the price? I know the deck has very low hours on it and is like new as well. Your input would be much appreciated. Cheers |
From the looks of the pics I would be on my way to pick it up NOW if it was a couple hundered miles closer it would be mine. :biggrin2:

That one looks nice. It looks like it was repainted and is clean. It has all the hard to find options, front ports and rear pto. I can't see the 3 point lift on the back but I should be there. It looks like the plastics are in good condition. That is top dollar for any diesel, especially a cyclops. But then again, you know he will probably come down a little. Good luck.:beerchug:

How about the bugs though? I've read about poor quality plastic hood components, too small of a battery, overheating. Are these isolated incidents or are they legit? I am looking for something that I could put a loader onto to play around in the yard.
|
More or less legit, but they can be overcome. The battery issue is actually more of a starter issue. The combination of the OEM starter and your typical garden tractor battery tends not to be a winning one as the years go by. There is a newer style starter that can be substituted that will allow much better cranking, especially during cold weather starts. Edit: It looks like maybe a larger battery can fit up in front? Seems bigger than a normal GT battery.
Plastics, well it's plastic. The overheating issue typically has to do with the operator not keeping up with cleaning the debris screen just ahead of the radiator. If I recall, the Kubota in that model is turned 180 degrees, putting the radiator back towards the dash. This is where clippings and other material can collect and cover up the radiator. Not a great idea, but form overcame function and they wanted that hood to slope down. Edit: Maybe they did it for the battery. I wouldn't let any of these niggles put me off a diesel. |
1782
Thats a very nice looking tractor. The battery is a full size car battery, I belive a type N. I dont see the rear pto in the photos. If it has it the rear hitch plate usually stands out a little further on the fender pan but maybe they removed most of it and the three point for some reason.
All in all a very good looking tractor with low hours. Mike |
As to the overheating of that Kubota engine, that should not be a problem as it is liquid cooled.

I have never had a diesel that was not cooling system limited They make more power than you can cool; 1957 JD 820 would pull 4-16's forever in 3rd gear, in 4th it would overheat. 1973 JD 4630 would pull 6-18's at 4.8 MPH, but, up a gear it would overheat. Most gas engines show signs of overloading before overheating, typically diesels' drop less than 100 rpm. :bigthink: |
[QUOTE=CADplans;118101]My experiences with diesel;
I have never had a diesel that was not cooling system limited They make more power than you can cool; So far no heat issues with my BX2660 :beerchug: |
That's my "next to buy" tractor, either a 1782 or 1772, whichever I find first.
The plastic, if in decent shape when you buy the tractor like that one, should be ok if you are very careful when removing the panels. Even if a tab breaks you can repair it, or in my case the panels are just fine even with a missing tab. It says 5 ft. plow, mine is 54", I think 60" is beginning to push the limits (if it really is 60"). I think 3 grand is a bit much though. Yes, to replace it with a tractor of similar heft would cost twice that, and I'm not sure you can find a diesel that compares to it, but in the end it is still an early '90's tractor. But (contradicting myself!), I'm not sure I've seen a 500 hour tractor like that, seems like all the diesels I've looked at have 1,000 plus hours on them. I realize that's not much help on price! I guess I'd say if you can afford it, you'll absolutely love the tractor. |
diesel overheating
I have never had a gt diesel but when farming used Ford 661 diesel and Massy Ferguson 165 and never had either over heat no matter how hard worked.
|
Mine has never over heated, but it will get considerably hotter when mowing if I don't keep the chaff screen over the radiator blown off. I will usually mow about an acre before needing to clean it off.
|
I have a 1973 Ford 3000 diesel and it has never had a cooling issue even in 100 degree summers.
My 1572 has gotten hot because they turned the engine around and placed some insulation on the hose. My hose rotted off and then it would overheat. After I insulated the hose the engine runs at a little past the first mark on the gauge. |
My 1782 has been pretty good to me, when I bought it had no oil in. I put oil in it and it crank right with a hot battery after sitting for over a year. But now I am having wiring troubles, but that the only problems I have had with mine. The one you are looking at seems to be a good deal ,but offer him a lower price you might get lucky.

Every 1782 I have been around incouding the one I onw, has had an over heating problem. The location of the radiator is the problem. It is under the console and this prevents good air flow cross the radiator.
I flushed, replaced water pump and thermostat and it did not help. that is why I parked it three years ago in the barn and have not ran it since. The plastic side panel mounting tabs will break or wear so they do not hold the panels on. THey also get brittle from the excess heat. The 1782 would be a ice tractor with the adjustable seat, tilt steering wheel and the higher driver position if it werenot for the plastic and the heating problem. The automotive size battery is a good addition also. The shut off solenoid can be an issue it it quits. No exact replacement is available but ther are some onthe market that can be made to work. Cost is very high, usually $175 and up. There are also two versions, early without fender skirts and late with fender skirts. Then the transaxle case is the final down side. Prone to cracking and breaking. |
Racenitro, if you parked it 3 years ago why not sell it?
|
My 1782 has no cooling issues. My Kubota G5200 with same engine also has no cooling issues. Niether have had any engine related issues. I haven't heard of any problems with the rearend of the cyclops supers either. I would think that one would still be going strong 1000 hrs from now.
|
Rear end problems occur when an owner does not keep the bolts that attach the rear to the frame tight. When I found out about this I checked mine and all but one were a little loose.
|
Is there enough room to add an electric fan to the backwards radiator models?
|
I wonder if that radiator is plugged, or a thermostat problem. I know they were mentioned before, but there is no reason for one tractor to have no overheat problems and the identical model to have them and be unsolveable, there has to be something keeping coolant from doing it's work.
