Here is what she looks like after a bit of work. I kind of like the looks of the 125 seat on it. Finally got the drive shaft where I was happy with it. Probably tear it down next winter and give her a paint job.

Great job, Kelly!

Wow, what a make over. It's looking good. I know that rear PTO and lift is probably just in your way. I'll send my address and you can ship it on down here and I'll put it to good use. :) :biggrin2:

That one took more than "A Bit Of Work" more like major reconstruction. Can't even tell it was the same tractor. Nice job!:beerchug:

Thanks for the compliments guys. DWayne sorry it's not equipped with the PTO or I would probably would have made you a deal on it. I cant imagine never needing anything PTO driven. PTO driven rototillers are like hens teeth up here and my yard is not big enough for a rear mounted finish mower. Power steering either has air in the lines or the steering mechanism is in need of rebuild

Donovan I will prolly bring this old gal to the plow day. Hope you can make it again this year.

Looks awesome your hard work is paying off!

power steering issue

I just installed a PS system with NO fluid in it and it only took about one minute for the entire system to fill and operate. Unless there is an air leak on the intake side I think you may have other issues than air in the lines. I have read several articles about trash in the system or a blocked filter causing the PS to not work smoothly. I'm sure you will work it out but thought it might help you to know how these system are so simple that the trouble options are few. You have done a great job so far and don't get too discouraged if you don't find the problem right away.

I agree, that took a lot of work.
Looks good now cubs-n-bxrs

Well I did a little trouble shooting on the power steering and I have come to the conclusion that the steering cylinder has bad seals in it. Has anyone repaired one of these cylinders before? I am not sure what end of the cylinder I should cut the welds on. I have already talked to the local Mitten fluid power guys and they can set me up with a seal kit if I can get it apart. Would like to hear if anyone has attempted this before and the outcome. Thanks in advance. Kelly

Sam Mac 03-15-2012 11:44 AM

Kelly

One of the Mittens is a good friend of mine. My guess is if your going to try to rebuild it you should put it in a lathe and remove the weld on the end the attaches to the frame. Then when you weld it back together the seals on the rod end won't get as much heat.

Sam Mac that was the plan. Just wanted to hear some opinions. A set of seals will cost peanuts compared to purchasing a new cylinder. Buying a used one is an option but you really don't know how well the internals are.

Kelly

I looked up the price for the cylinder, they are proud of that to say the least. Wondered what the BXRS refers to?

Sam Mac I got the steering cylinder rebuilt at work today. There is no seals on the piston it is an o-ring. The o-ring was all galled up no wonder it didn't steer worth a darn. The o-ring is a size 182. That was an extremely simple project to do. It was all of a 45 minute job from start to finish. Can't wait till the morning to reinstall it. The bxrs is short for my dogs.

Sam Mac 03-16-2012 08:15 AM

Kelly

Did you take some pics of the rebuild? I'd like to see what's involved.
Are you in the Syracuse area, or as Mitten calls it Tundracuse?

Sam

cubs-n-bxrs 03-16-2012 10:53 AM

Sam Mac The rebuild was just exactly like you described. I did it at work and they really frown on cameras being used in the shop. Dismissible offense if you know what I mean. I did not replace the shaft seal as it was not leaking. Sam I am about 25 minutes south of Syracuse in a town called Cortland N.Y.

I have a friend that used to work for Pall corp in Cortland. I used to travel out that way on the way to Watkins Glen. Spent way too much time at that track.:biggrin2:

I just want to know, how fast was the truck going when it FELL OFF??? OMG! What the heck happened to it when you started? Looks good now, but before it was in pretty SAD shape! :biggrin2:

Mike that old girl spent her entire life in a dairy barn pushing cow poop into the gutters. It amazes me that it even ran. Runs like a top though. What gets me is the fact that the rest of his machinery is in near show room condition no matter what the age of it is. I am pretty pleased with how it turned out. I have addressed the last of the mechanical issues and now it's time to have fun with it. I am in the process of building an A-Frame/ sleeve hitch adapter to mount my plow on. Can't wait to take it to a few plow days this year.
