Bought my first cub cadet...how did I do?
Well...I have been looking for a week so I finally bought my first one...what do you think?
I paid $1400. The good: No rust Runs strong Drive shaft replaced last fall The bad: PTO switch must be held up for mower deck to work Headlight switch broken Mower deck pretty well worn Went to start it up to back off the trailer and the starter won't engage! No clicking or anything! Fuel pump runs...ideas? http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...Picture001.jpg http://i268.photobucket.com/albums/j...Picture007.jpg |
Uh , WOOOOOOW !!!!

The starter and PTO switch are available from one our sponsors. Your starter not engaging may also be the ignition switch , so you might do some testing.
The deck looks good in your pics ???? |
Horrid, I will gladly give you, your money back to try again. LOL Just picking great find some people have all the luck geez
|
I really do like it. congrats
|
You did very well!
|
You did great on that one! Super sweet score.:beerchug:

Starter worked fine a couple of hours ago. PO disabled the safety interlock on the brake... But I pushed it in anyway. Glow plugs work, fuel pump runs, but no starter noises. Ammeter does register heavy discharge though when I turn the key. |
Bill, you did well. The PTO switch has a contact that is closed when it is in the off position. The tractor will not start unless the switch is "off". Wigle the switch with the key in the start position to see if that helps. There is also a brake switch that must be closed for the tractor to start. Your starter could also be going bad as well. I would check the switches first. There is a starter upgrade post on here somewhere that explains how to replace the starter. Also check all your ground wires. I think there should be 2 heavy ground wires, one on the frame and one to the engine cradle or block. Good luck!

Jump it
With a simple jumper cable from the battery to the starter (Positive) and the other to ground on the frame will tell you right now if it is the starter. I would do that first to save all of the safety switch detective work. Everyone is right here but if you want to know up front whether the starter is bad jump it. Otherwise you got a great deal in my opinion. I prefer yellow and white but red will do in a pinch!

I had some of the same issues on my 1872 and here is what I found. May help you. The PO had never adjusted the gap on the pto. That is probably why you have to hold it. Either that or it's because of one of the safety switches that were bypassed. Always a good idea to check the PTO gap. If it is too wide it will draw excess current. This will make the connectors at the PTO switch, ignition switch, and the PTO relay get hot and melt along with the PTO relay itself. I had to replace all of this on my tractor.
I'd start by setting the PTO gap. Then I would look up the wiring diagram and check that each and every safety switch is working or PROPERLY bypassed(not recommended). Some switches are normnally open and some are normally closed. Then move on to checking and cleaning the wiring connectors and grounds. Beautiful tractor! |
The PO may have had the brake safety switch unhooked for that reason. It may be keeping the motor from starting if the switch is bad. If so I would replace the switch. And also as stated the PTO switch has a safety included to not allow the motor to start if the switch were to be in the engaged position. You will probably need to replace the PTO switch with a new one. As said our sponsors should have what you need. And these diesels are notorious for hard starting with the small garden tractor batteries, but it can be done. You need to find the largest CCA battery and put it in there. Also there is a glow plug upgrade that can be done to help cut down on the draw from the battery and also as mentioned, there is a high torque starter that can be upgraded to, with a bit of work. The only mod I have on my BRS is the glow plug mod and heavy gauge wires for the ground from the battery and for the positive wires. Factory size is just a bit small. I'll see if I can round up the starter and glow plug mod write ups for you. Even with these few things that need attention, you got an "awesome" Cub. Way to go. :beerchug:

My 2182 had the exact PTO problem. It was a bad seat safty switch. The PTO is designed to shut off if you get off of the seat. I'd check that . Great CUB! KayakDon

Went home at lunch and checked it out. The PTO switch was on! Turned it off and she fired right up. Drove it around the yard for 10 minutes for fun!
