anti freeze for wheel weights
Hidy yall
Someone elsewhere here mentioned anti freeze for wheel weights. Will that rust a rim? Any down side to it? Any idea what a 23x10.5 for a 1650 would weigh per wheel? Do you fill it as full as possible? My land is hilly and I need little more traction on some angles in grass. Thanks yall, Earl |
I use RV antifreeze. Some guys use regular antifreeze others use windshield washer fluid. I take the wheel off and break the bead on the valve stem side then just pour it in. I'm getting old and my memory is going, no make gone bad but I think I got about 9 gals in my 23X12X10.5's so 70 lbs. give or take per wheel. Gotta get around to doing my Supers they are way too light in the butt, or I need to drink a lot more beer. :beerchug:

I change the antifreeze in my vehicles, mix what I drained out of the car 50-50 with more water, and use it in the tires.
You get to kill 2 birds with one stone!! Antifreeze has rust inhibitors, so, it protects the steel. |
My 10.5 x 23 have 3 gals of windshield washer fluid per. never weighed them but it should add approx 23-24 pounds each.

Well it looks like it is done by several.
I did not know about rust inhibiters in anti freeze. Good! I never thought to break the bead an pour it in. But that is a good idea. I will weigh the tire before I do it. Then I will weigh the tire after and will know the weight I get in them. I need to get to antifreeze sale. I had not thought of windshield wiper fluid. It is probably cheaper. I do not know about rust though. I hope to find some iron weights eventually. But I need traction now. Thanks yall Earl |
never heard of rust forming from windshield washer fluid.

Filled 2 sets of 23x10.50-12's now with washer fluid. Both held about 7 and half gallons each if i remember right. Tire filled combined weight was right about 95lbs a tire. Only cost about $20 a set. Broke the bead down on one spot only took about an hour for both.

wind shield wiper fluid
If wind shield wiper fluid does not rust rims then I would rather have it.

I have 9 gallons of WWF in each 23x10.5 and I'm pretty sure it won't rust my wheels. Each wheel, tire and fluid weighs 90 pounds.

I used old atifreeze from our shop in 122 ag tires added about 50 lbs. per wheel. broke one side down and filled from side. you get more in that way.

I have not tried this yet but others on here have claimed to use plain water and 8oz of Dawn dishwashing liquid. They claimed it did not freeze in Ohio winters and the soap acts as a anti rusting agent. I was going to do this but I can get all the used anti-freeze I want from work.

Yes, there still needs to be some air space. If you leave enough air space, you won't make a mess every time you check the pressure or add air. I always use tubes so I can't really answer your third question, but I can't see why it would be any harder than if there wasn't fluid in there.
I would also use tubes unless the tires are new and have a deep, difficult to seat (and unseat) bead like the Tru-Powers have. Don't even think about not using tubes with 30+ year old tires. There isn't much room left for air if you have them filled well, so the difference between flat and overinflated is small. If it is underinflated, the tire can be knocked off the rim more easily than you'd think, and then you have a gigantic mess, particularly if you're using used antifreeze or Calcium Chloride. And yes, I have done this...I once had a tire chain either get caught on something or otherwise shift, and it pulled the tire off the rim. That was with a set of old washer-fluid filled tires that did not have tubes. At least the washer fluid melted the snow I couldn't finish plowing:ExtremeFunny: |
I'll take your last one - I have 23x10.50 turfs on mine and it was a little difficult to remake the bead, but I would say that it took me an hour for both. I can't see getting more than 7 gallons in a 23x10.50 turf, not sure about the ags though. Any more than that and you can't let air out of the tire if needed, you start losing the fluid. I used antifreeze to water mix of 3:4. What a difference!
