CC 129 Restore
2 Attachment(s)
As some of you might have saw in the "Restoration Tips" thread...I have been planning on getting a 129 from a guy who's grandfather (that my parents and grandparents happen to have known for years) bought it new. :beerchug:
The grandfather is now in a nursing home, with not much time left, unfortunately. :( So, with knowing the family that bought it new, I am going to have this thing restored...and hopefully be able to show it to the grandfather. I told the grandson, which has become a friend of mine, my plans...and he says it would bring back a lot of memories for him, and that he would love to see it looking nice again, also. :beerchug: Today, he brought it out. After messing around with it...She's alive!! :beer2: Here's some pictures, notice the black replacement engine... |
Glad you got it running, looking forward to the restoration. :beerchug:

Got it power washed! Looks a lot better... :beerchug:
Tomorrow I'm going to get the engine out, and start dissembling it. Talked to the guy painting it for me, who also knows the family really well, and will be taking everything but the engine (I will be painting it) to him next week sometime. When he is done all I will have to do is drop the engine in. |

After power washing the trans and driving it around a little, got to seeing a little oil on the relief valves...In this case, do I need new valves, or new o-rings? :bigthink:
Wouldn't worry about it if I were not repainting it. |
Conner Congrats on the 129! I've been looking forward to this thread since you told me about it.
|
Thanks Duke! More pictures will come tomorrow! :beerchug:
Any idea on the relief valves? |
Ordered new decals from Maple Hunter... :beerchug:

I think the engines in the later 129's came stock black if i remember right? Looking forwars to seeing it done, has a great cause to it.

Yes, your relief valves have gone sneakers up. There are 2 ebay options from a seller named "timarca."
1 - Send him your valves and they will be rebuilt like new for a price quite a bit less than buying new ones 2 - Same seller has just come out with a version of these valves that have a removable C clip, making the O-rings and other innards replaceable by the user for just a few dollars in the future. |

Thanks! And hmm...I will have to look into that. I looked up the serial and its a 1972 I believe. :beerchug: Quote:
Thanks for your help! I just bought the rebuild service from him. Quantity of 2 is just a little over $70. This project is getting expensive! But will be well worth it, when I am taking it to shows and parades in a few months! :beerchug: |

Got a lot done today....
Got the fenders off, with help from the grinder. Then I took the engine out and power washed the rolling chassis, while standing it straight up with the loader. :beerchug: After cleaning most of the oil and dirt off...took the trans and dash tower off. Next I will be splitting the trans for a new hydro-to-transaxle cork gasket. Tomorrow I will be sending the relief valves off to have them rebuilt. |

Here's the engine serial number...anyone know where I could find a look-up? :bigthink:
|
According to the K-series service manual, the engine was built in 1997.

Thanks, Duke! It sure makes getting all the oil and dirt off easier! :beerchug: Quote:
Thanks, Allen! Quote:
Thanks, Nick! I wondered the same thing...He must have got stuck on something and spun the tires trying to get off. :bigthink: |
Gaskets came in today! :beerchug:
Now I will have the pleasure on tearing into the trans! :Woo: :biggrin2: |

Today, I got to play with the new parts washer! :biggrin2:
Put the carb and air cleaner cover in...along with an extra carburetor core. :beerchug: Letting them soak in the degreaser over night, and will hit them again tomorrow...then it's time for some more "play" with the sandblaster! :biggrin2: |
Looks great Conner! Your set to get some parts cleaned now.
|
mrcubcadet......you're making great progress on a very worthwhile cause! Is his grandson involved in the restoration? I think that would be very meaningful if he was able to get involved somehow, even if he isn't mechanically inclined. Thanks for sharing lots of great pictures of your progress. Keep up the great work!

Thanks! And you bet!...Tomorrow I'm going to try and get an old window air conditioner in there! :beerchug: :biggrin2: Quote:
Thanks, bud! And, not yet. But I have talked to him and he will be coming out soon...at least to check it out, and hang out. He is good friends with the painter..so I would guess he will be spending some time there, while it gets painted! :biggrin2: |
Looking real good, Conner!
|
I finally seem to have all my parts for this project! Paint, decals, rebuilt relief valves, trans-to-rearend cork gasket, and rearend cover gasket. :beerchug:
Have decided to save a little money, have some fun, and just do this restoration myself...Hope to get some progress done with the trans gaskets, and prepping this week. |

We will find a way!! :beerchug: I think I will take you up on the sheet metal. I can do the frame, rear end, grille, and wheels myself. But the rest.... :bigthink: |

Thanks, Allen!
Got the frame power washed, and decided to go ahead an start priming with an extra Valspar primer can I had...Will flip it over and do the other side tomorrow morning. Turning out really nice, without any runs. :beerchug: |
Anytime Conner! Your frame is looking good!
|
Conner your doing a great job!
|
looks good little man,,,, remember on sanding primer, only sand what you want the paint to stick to.....
|
I seen you where you are going to have your hydro check valves rebuilt , i would strongly suggest getting the automatic valves instead. They are ALOT more convenient , especially once your flapper that holds them down breaks. They may seem pricey , but well worth it.
Go Here .... http://onlycubcadets.com/ The link ain't workin' , go to Technical Library , Tractors , Hydro Check Valves , and there is a supplier. |
Thanks guys! :beerchug: ...This is turning out much nicer than I thought it would!
Going to try and get the transmission/rear end done, and ready to prime tomorrow. Then prime it, and finish priming the frame Thursday morning...Before the 90-100 degree temperature! I am planning on shooting the frame and trans/rear end with paint this weekend sometime...Can't wait to try out the new gravity feed gun! :biggrin2: |
Looks great mrcubcadet! Be sure to wear a great respirator if you are painting with hardener. It'll look awesome when you're done.

Thanks, bud! :beerchug: I will make sure to if I do..But I don't believe I'm going to use hardener on the frame, and rear end. |

Spent a couple hours this morning working on the trans/rear end.. :beerchug:
Took the rear cover off, dumped out all the green Hy-Tran, and replaced the gasket..Then took the hydro pump off, and replaced the old thin cork gasket. Sealed everything back up, and then installed the rebuilt relief valves. This thing shouldn't have any leaks, now! :beerchug: |
