Need Carb information for Cub Cadet Original
 

The Original Cub Cadet I bought had the carburetor and exhaust removed and holes plugged for storage but he lost the parts. I can weld up my own exhaust if I can't find the proper parts so I'm not too concerned with that. I'm more worried about finding a proper carb for the K161S engine. I would like to find an OE style carb for the restoration I'm planning, however I'd just like to get it running for now. Does anyone know of any brand carb that will fit on a Kohler K161 and what vehicle would I find this on?

If it ain't off an original it will not work with an oil bath air cleaner.

Couldn't I just use whatever carb that fits and then modify an oil bath filter to fit on it? I have another question, does anyone know what spark plug will fit in the K161? It has an old nasty Champion J19LM in it now but I can't seem to find those anymore and every parts store keeps giving me spark plugs that are similar in size to the one that came in it but nothing exact. I don't want to chance it with something that is "close enough".

Nevermind the spark plug question, I took back the incorrect plug they gave me and talked to a parts person who actually knew how to look up parts numbers. Champion still makes the J19LM even though now they say "made in Mexico" on the box. What is this world coming to? Just think how the unemployment rate would decrease if just a few of these large companies brought the blue-collar jobs back to the states. Most of the long time American companies still have headquarters in the U.S. but their products are made overseas. I wonder if these white-collar creeps even care that they are destroying this country and turning it into a nation of poor consumers when we use to be the richest nation on the planet back when we were the largest producers of goods. Uh, sorry for getting off topic and I don't wish to start a heated arguement and get in trouble for it but this stuff really gets me going. Thanks for the help guys.

The choke arm on an O carb is in a different position than a one off a 70-73.as for the plug a J8C works for me.

What I want to know really is what is the namebrand carb that came on the Cub originals and what other engines came with this carb so I can find one in the salvage yard. Does anyone have a good picture of one so I have something for reference?

Thank you for the picture of the N-series Carb. I was not able to find one while checking the salvage yards. I did find a Carter with the numbers I wrote in my previous post. I was told this will fit on a Kohler K161 and from what I can tell, everything looks similar. Anyone know for sure if I can substitute an N-series for the one I found? I'm aware of the oil bath filter issue as well but just need to know if this carb will fit.

Do you have any pics of your carb? It should have a # 20 stamped in the carb throat on the choke end.

No I don't have a carb to take any pictures of and that is why I'm looking for one. If my Cub had a carb I'd just rebuild. Since I don't have one nor can I find one, instead I'm looking for a carb to substitute what came on "Originals" as OE. I've tried finding an OE N-series Carter in my area but those are hard to come by unless I buy one online and wait a week for delivery. I'm not doing a numbers matching restoration, I just want to get it running soon so my wife, kids, and I can bring it along with our other machines to an antique equipment/tractor show in a few days.
I know other carbs that were not OE for the K161 may require some adapting to get linkages, filter, etc. to work but I'm no stranger to fabricating my own parts so this would be no sweat. I'm sure if I wanted to I could get just about any equally sized carb to fit but that may take lots of time and effort so I'm asking if anyone knows of a carb that will fit the Kohler K161 that would require the minimal amount of time an effort to get it working?
The show is just a few days away so I'm kind of in a hurry so any help that could possibly point me towards a suitable carburetor would be appreciated.

Well then any cub cadet 7 Hp carb will work.One off a wheel horse b80 as well, any k181 carb will work also.older Jd round fender 110 will work also.as long it is a carter model n and the # 20 stamped in the carb throat it will fit.Any other will not fit the mounting holes.If you want to fit a Briggs carb or a Tecumseh carb it may with work mods but why not get the right one?

I do plan on getting the right one maybe in a year or so when I get the time to restore it but for now it would be worth the couple bucks I'd spend on a carb that is not OE just to get it moving under it's own power. The salvage yard I get my parts from is run by an old man who in my opinion is getting a little senile. He thinks anything that fits in the palm of your hand is only worth a couple bucks so I could walk out with a crate full of carbs for probably $60 and be able to piece something together for the time being.
I made a template for the carb gasket and brought it to the yard with me and it appears to be a very common design. I found all types of carbs that look like they may fit including the one Carter I mentioned. I know it's not an N-series but the thing looks identical in every way to the N. From the numbers I gave earlier, does this sound like a carb that would work?
