Who's ready for snow...

1 Attachment(s)
I know, I know...you don't want to think about snow but I'm ready just in case. You never know in Vermont...

Thanks, Lew for the QA plow frame she is painted and already installed.

Even replaced my nice rebuilt hydraulic unit with a fully restored hydraulic unit that I got from a Cub buddy...I guess I need another Cub to put my spare hydraulic unit on. :biggrin2:

Sam Mac 10-08-2012 04:24 PM

Nice setup.

All ready here in SW VA. Got the plow and chains on the BX, bring it on. NOT.:beerchug:

I am I am! I can't wait for snow! I can remember a few years ago not wanting to say that, but I am now!

The mild winter we had last year put me in a funk. I used to love moving snow with my dad's Farmall H w/3 pt mounted freeman blade (he still has the set up) but since I moved into my own place I've been wishing for snow to move on my own. Last winter I had a shovel to move the bit of stuff we had, but wasn't much fun. Fast forward to this spring- I picked up my 147 and a snow blade shortly later and have been looking forward to a nice long winter. (ask me this in february.) I don't have it installed yet- I'm planning on doing that next week as the snow has been knocking just a short 7 or 8 hr drive from here.

CubNub 10-08-2012 07:21 PM

Nice setup Drh. I think I'm ready. I'm just having a hard time finding wheel weights for a decent price here in southern NY. So should I go with a turf tire with chain or a narrow ag tire that are calcium filled?

bkw3614 10-08-2012 07:32 PM

My Snapper walk-behind snow blower is serviced and ready to go. My Cub Cadet 1250 Nightmare has Stabil in the gas tank. All I need to do to prepare it for winter is to run it out of gas in the carburetor and cover it up. I'll see it next spring.

teejk 10-08-2012 07:46 PM

snow blowing is fun...but not as fun as the blade! I mowed last week but am waiting for some rain to settle the dust before I drag the new yard and seed it (wasn't a very good year to try to establish a lawn). then I have to mow off the wildflower meadow (hard frost on Saturday so it's ready). Then into my heated shop, drop the deck (ready for another teardown/painting), get the chains and plow on and move to the cold side of the shop (pointing out of course).

had to hit the local CC dealer last week...they actually sell what has to be a 48" blower now...we have a gravel drive here and my 28" doesn't much like it...can't imagine the wear and tear with that bigger machine.

My lineup isn't ready yet...but I do have one ready so far...the decked out 62 Original!

I still need to mount up the 36 inch blower on either the 1650 again or possibly the 147 if I swap out PTO clutches. My NF blade may go on the 106 or the 102. May also put the blade on the 61 Original and put a WF blade on a 169 with a Windbreaker cab.

ol'George 10-08-2012 08:04 PM

Snow is a four letter word!

TheIHMan 10-08-2012 08:20 PM

I'm ready but the cubs arn't yet. Once I get done mowing grass blades will go on the diesel and 1250. :beerchug:

mrcubcadet 10-08-2012 08:26 PM

I'm ready, physically and mentally! :biggrin2:

Got the blade and chains ready for the Super, so once the first flake falls...they both will be thrown on. :beerchug:

One thing I would like to do to the 1782 before snow would be to rig a cab on it. I'm thinking about finding an old Craftsman, Snapper, Simplicity, etc...Something cheaper than an actually Cub Cadet, or IH cab.

cub149 10-08-2012 08:27 PM

NOT ME!!!!!! I like it in the 60's and 70's. You yanks can have all the snow you want. Well, it's nice to have the one or two 4" and the ocasional 8" snows but I would shoot myself if I had to deal with snow all winter long.
However, my blade and chains are at ready and yes it is fun to push snow with the ole 149.

EricR 10-08-2012 09:14 PM

I am sitting here with my hand up, LOL.

Though I will have to mow grass one more time and mulch leaves a few times before the blower goes on the 2086 but my GrandFathers old 102 has the blade on it all year round so BRING it on this year, And Chip, it's just not winter without snow. :biggrin2:

Last year when we got surprised by the October snow, I used my 122 in "dirt" trim to clear the driveway. 8.50 ags with 65 lb cast iron wheel weights weights. Not fun since the aggravation factor was high because of no traction

Turfs and chains at minimum, fluid turfs with weights and chains are much better. Ags and chains are better than nothing but you do NOT get a good footprint with ags.

Diz Jr. 10-08-2012 09:16 PM

After last year i don't know if i am even going to take my decks off till i see some snow on the ground. Had the 149 and 169 set up with the blades and never got to use them once :bash2:
Won't take me long to get them on if it does start snowing :biggrin2:

ACecil 10-08-2012 10:14 PM

Not yet, we don't get snow here that often. I'll have the blade on soon.

PaulS 10-08-2012 10:41 PM

As EricR stated we are sort of ready. I am still mowing grass so I cannot take the mower off just yet. We do have a plan though. Since we only live a couple of houses from each other our plan is to put his blade on my 2084 and his blower on his 2086. Of course we have one 102 already with the blade and that should cover just about all contingencies. I have to put the ags on my 2084 yet but that will happen possibly tomorrow evening. Woo Hoo.

I know, Conner! I'd love to push some snow. Maybe this Winter. :beerchug:

zippy1 10-08-2012 11:34 PM

You all can have my snow when we get it. The older I get the more I hate it.
But none the less, I'm ready. Pull the truck up into the plow, hook up two pins and plug in two cables turn on the heat, and we're off.
With a graveled two hundred yard long driveway, fields on the east and west sides, I'll use the truck. No freezing covered with snow for this boy, been there, done that.
I know it's being a wimp, but I'm a dry and warm wimp:biggrin2:

4SPEED 10-09-2012 03:19 AM

as soon as the grass go's to sleep a blower go's on the 882 with 75lb and chains on each tire. and the 582 gets the blade , 90lbs in the wheels with chains. I may put the blade on the 125, not sure yet. I dont have weights or chains for it. so it might stay in for the winter.

nikster 10-09-2012 04:59 AM

Got the blade on the # 127 all ready, weights & chains. Ifn' I get my arse in gear. I'll have the #109 ready & the thrower on?
Took my buddies suggestion - deflate rear tires, wrap on the chains, bungee them in & re-inflate my tires. Made it simpler than ever before.

Pass on the calcium and go with Rim Guard aka beet juice. It'll not eat your rims or be harmful if you get a leak. Plus it has the highest weight per gallon you can get.:beerchug:

Snow is over rated buddy!

When you going to mount up that blade on?:bigthink:

If you get the chains tight enough you won't need a bungee when you re inflate the tires.

Not sure, might put it on a different cub! :bigthink::biggrin2:

lwrehm 10-09-2012 06:11 PM

Not ready yet, maybe this weekend, need to switch the QA-42A from narrow to wide frame this year, I hope to use the 149 if I need to.

Donovan M. 10-09-2012 06:24 PM

Im ready to go, 100R isnt.

red56turbo 10-10-2012 10:49 AM

Not ready yet here either. My goal is to put the blade on the 1650. Problem is, the motor's not in the 1650 yet. :bash2: Guess I'd better get a move on. Always got the Bobcat skidsteer to fall back on........:biggrin2:

Alvy 10-10-2012 08:13 PM

Going home to New York to see my family this winter and hope to see some white stuff. Really hopeful though that the 127 will be mowing grass this winter. Sounds weird but I am in Florida so that's what happens down here, would love to use an old cub again to move some snow though.

Flatbedford 10-10-2012 08:22 PM

Not quite ready yet. This will be the first winter with the 149. The blade is ready but I just realized that my snow thrower is a QA36 and NOT a QA36A! I have located a cheap QA42A, but have to make time for the 3 hour round trip to pick it up. I should have a QA36 for sale soon.

Not ready here yet, though I have 4 cubs with snow blowers and 2 with blades....the worst part is only being able to ride one cub at a time!

lwrehm 10-14-2012 05:44 PM

Spent a while in the shop while it rained in S.E. Wisconsin today, mounted the QA-42a on the 149. First time using the "quick attach", man that was much easier than bolting the thrower on the 102! The 149 is pretty beat up from the half-A$$'d things the previous owners did, and man is that hydro-lift nice.

Next up, I need to make some half-a$$'d mods myself to get the head/taillights working, next summer I think I will replace the wireharness. The PO had all kinds of changes to the wiring for the lights including a fried switch and a separate toggle switch for the tail lights.

I also replace the beat up 4 link chains with the set of 2 links that I had on the 102, for some reason they "crimped" the links on the old chains so I needed to cut a link on one side to get the old one off.

Now its time for a homebrew and some football.

without giving myself away, I'll relate a story about an ice-fishing trip where the leader's wife did pickled eggs...forgot to shell them!

At least they would have plenty of calcium!

darkminion_17 10-14-2012 07:40 PM

Been ready since last year...

Cubcrazy 10-14-2012 09:51 PM

I'm with ya Lew!
The 2072 always has it's winter gear on!

Muzzy 10-15-2012 05:46 PM

My plow is on my 147 and I'm going to look at a snowblower tomorrow for my 125. I have a skidsteer so, the cubs are used on the smaller storms. I'm also doing a restoration on a 129 that will have a snowplow, york rake and rear scraper blade.

Flatbedford 10-15-2012 09:18 PM

I just found out that I am going to be even less ready for snow. I lost poout on the deal that I thought I had on a snowthrower for the 149. I have a blade, but I'd like to have both. Anybody near lower NY want to trade a QA36 for a QA36/42A?

I'd love to get my hands on some of that rim guard but there are no dealers here in Alberta!
I thought I heard it was actually slightly less dense than calcium chloride?

cubfixer 10-16-2012 06:37 PM

I am almost ready for snow. I got my blade blasted and painted, got chains, have a friend looking for some wheel weights at a tractor show in the next state.

I am now looking for some new front tires. I currently have some bald multi-ribbed tires that must be replaced. 16-6.5-8. Any suggestions?

I also have two 4.80-8 tires and rims with some good tread, but the rims are shot - the inside bearing area for the race are wallowed out on both rims, but may be OK for the winter.

I am thinking that the narrow tires may be better in snow. I could install a bearing and tig weld the race to the worn-out wheel. The PO used a hose clamp around the bearing surface on the wheel to hold the bearing in place.

Any recommendations?
