New guy in CT with a 105

Hey everyone. I'm Jeff from Connecticut. I just picked up a Cub Cadet 105 that is in fairly decent shape. It will need some TLC but it seems pretty solid. Someone converted the front PTO clutch to an electric unit. It actually looks like it's an automotive air conditioner clutch. It seems to work, not sure how long it'll last though.

I'm sure I'll have a ton of questions to ask on here as well as a lot of searching the forums for helpful information.

Nice to meet you.
If you can, get some pictures of the electric pto on your 105.
Would love to see how they did it :biggrin2:

Welcome to OCC. I would like to see some pics of the PTO conversion if possible. Does the engine have a gear drive starter? I have been pondering a electric clutch set up on my 125 but would have to install a newer engine in it with a gear drive starter meaning the frame would have to be modified for the larger flywheel.

I will work on posting up some pictures of the PTO this weekend. It still has the starter/generator.

Here are the pictures that were requested, as well as a few others.

The toggle switch in the cigarette lighter block off plug engages the PTO.

I've got a few questions. And I'm sure I'll have a ton more to follow.

1) Is there supposed to be a plate attached to the cylinder head to block exhaust heat from getting up onto the regulator? I've seen pictures of those plates on other Cubs so I'm not sure if the 105 came with one or not.

2) Is there supposed to be some sort of chute on the discharge side of the mower deck? The blade comes real close to the opening, that seems sort of dangerous to me.

3) Right now the steering is extremely sloppy. Is there a way to tighten up the steering box? All the tie rod ends seem nice and tight.

1. Yes there is a heat shield part that bolts to the head of the engine and goes to the muffler... In place of that square stock on there now.

2. Not sure about the chute, I dont think so, I have never seen one....

3. There are steering rebuild kits available, it could be a worn out bearing in it or just old parts that naturally wore out. Also, the left spindle cap may be worn out where the ti-rod from the steering box connects to the spindle, very often the coil pin wears out, and even sometimes the spindle wears out and a lot of people drill out the spindle and put a bigger bolt through it (I am NOT recommending this, just stating a fact)

Hmmm, now I guess I need to find one of those heat shields somewhere.

I'll have to dig a little deeper into the steering play then. I did notice some slight play at the left spindle cap where the roll pin is.

Hello Jeff Im Bob from Rhode Island I have alot of parts pm I will give u my number if intrested.

Well...., It seems as though I have bigger fish to fry than just needing a heat shield. I had noticed it had been hard to start so I just thought it was cold blooded. Then when I was mowing my lawn with it I was noticing some pretty decent smoke coming from the crankcase breather. I then did a compression test, barely even 50 psi. I first checked for a tight valve but they were fine. I then proceeded to pull the head looking for a blown head gasket, that looked fine. Then I noticed a rust ring where it looks like the rings had stuck at one point in their life. I then noticed quite a bit of piston slop in the cylinder. So I then removed the engine and started to tear it down. At this point I needed to remove that converted auto AC PTO clutch. Well come to find out that was pretty well hacked on there to make it work.

So now I'm looking to rebuild the engine and I'd like to find the original PTO clutch assembly. I pretty much need everything from the pulleys to the clutch to the rockshaft. Is there anywhere that I can get this stuff from or do I need to just search Ebay?

Thanks.
