782/1711 restoration
3 Attachment(s)
Getting started on my 1711 that I'm calling a 782 which it will be since I'm painting it RED! I started by taking off the fenders and then broke the rearend away from the frame. I'm surprised that even though is a 85 model, CCC already started to cheapen them up. What I mean by that is aluminum rearend, no protection between the battery and the rear tires and also the starter seloniod is right above the left rear tire where there is no protection. Going to try to take the engine out tomorrow!

Please keep us updated, Adam! You're off to a great start.

Thanks Allen!

Adam that sucks that the rear was broken away from the frame, but I know it'll be right when your done with it.:beerchug:

I took the engine out of it today. That was a real PAIN, all the bolts were tough all the way off. Also took the rear tires off the rear end. Tomorrow I'm going to pressure wash everything so hopefully by friday night or monday night I'll be able to paint the black (rear end, front axle and tower) Pics later tonight

Well I tried to paint the frame tonight. Started fine but then the paint started to run like crazy. So I went ahead and put 1 good coat on and it ran some more. I'll let it set for about 2 weeks and then wet sand it and try to paint it again. Next week's project will be to clean up the rearend and front axle and paint those, and if I get around to it I'll pull the Mag 18 out of the 1811 parts tractor, put a new oil pan gasket on it and maybe even paint it. Here's pics

Thanks for the pics, Adam! You'll get it! :beerchug:

Well, I was finally able to do some more work on the cub yesterday. It was warm outside so I pressure washed the rear end, tires, and hoods. I also pulled the Mag 18 out of the 1811 parts cub. Found the oil leak on the Mag 18 too!. I thought it was the engine seal but once I got to looking at it I saw something happened to the oil plug and one of the PO's put a pipe with a cap on the end for the oil plug. It would of worked fine if the engine never had to be pulled and if they used thread sealer. So now I just have to pull the plug out of the KT 17 that came out of the 1711 and put it in the Mag 18! Hopefully this week I will resand the frame and repaint it. And if things work out I'll paint the rear end and front axle also. :beerchug:

Good job, Adam! Thanks for the updates.

Got the frame repainted today, turned out really good. I would post pics if my computer would cooperate. O well, next up is painting the rear-end and front axle.
|
Thanks for the update, Adam! Can't wait to see your pics.

Got the front axle painted and put back on and painted the rear-end last night. Tonight I am going to connect the rear end to the frame and take some pics.
|
Sounds like you're making some nice progress, Adam!
|
Well I have been slowly making progress. I got the dash tower repainted and got the wheels sandblasted wednesday evening. This morning I got the wheels primered. I am going to try to paint them tomorrow and take some pics. I am still waiting for the weather to get warmer so I can sandblast the fenders and deck and pressure wash the engine and then paint them all.
|
Appreciate the update! Keep up the good work, Adam!
|
Well, I tried painting the wheels today but it was so cold the paint wouldn't dry and it ran like crazy. I'll just have to wait a week or so and try again.
|
Sorry to hear that Adam.
Hopefully it will warm up soon. |
You'll get it, Adam. Shouldn't be too long, before it gets warm.

painting wheels
Something I have learned to get really nice shiny wheels is to mount them on an axle like device and after you cover the tire, if you leave them on the wheel, slowly spin the wheel as you spray it. If you then keep it turning at a very slow rpm you can go with a very wet layer and you will get a high gloss wheel. It is so difficult to NOT get runs when trying to spray in such confined areas and at bad angles. I use my heat gun as I turn the wheel for about five minutes and I do not get any runs but get real shiny wheels. I resell JD garden tractors and my customers cannot believe that I use rattle cans on the entire tractor. One last thing, while the wheel is turning if the tire is still on it you can take an artists brush with the wheel paint on it to paint that outer ring that is so hard to paint unless you spend a week taping it perfectly. I just hold the brush on the lip and as the wheel turns it paints a perfect line.:beerchug:

Got some more work done on the cub today. Got the wiring harness switched over from the 1811 (I think I got everything switched over right). Also got the engine pressure washed and got the driveshaft painted. Pics tomorrow. One quick question, when I bought the 1811 with the Mag 18 that I am using the starter screeched like crazy when it was turning over. Is there any way to fix this without getting a new starter?

Well I have got a lot done lately, I got the new starter on the engine, painted the engine, drive shaft, and a few other parts and got the engine slid in and hooked all the electrical hooked up. All that is left before I can start in and move it is to get the fuel filter and inline shut-off, new oil filter and starter solenoid. Hopefully I can get it running by next weekend. :beerchug:
|
Nice work, that will be a sweet ride when your done. :beerchug:
|
Good job Adam!
You are coming along great! |
Thanks guys! I noticed when I was cleaning the gas tank it still had the IH and part number stamped in it which is pretty cool. I guess CCC just bought up all of IH's inventory because this is the gas tank out of the 1711 which is a late 85 model.
