782 deck

5 Attachment(s)
Some work continued today on the 782 deck The front roller holder was pretty egg shaped so I had an idea:biggrin2:
Welded a washer on the outside and filled in the inside gap with weld and filled it round again. Next I built a new pin because you can clearly see it was in need of some attention also.
Took some round stock I had around and cut it to length, then welded two washers on the one end. Just need to drill a hole on the end yet and good to go.
Needless to say, it's good and tight now. Still need to straiten the front of the deck where it's pushed in. Then sand blast and new paint.
Also have a question regarding the deck. My tag reads, MODEL# 44" Deck 35819x 44C
Ok, when I looked this up on Part Tree for the 782 tractor, the picture shows the deck should have wheels at all four corners. Mine just has them on the rear corners. ?
Thanks

Good job, Todd!

Methos 01-19-2013 02:25 PM

Todd you do good work! :beer2:

R Bedell 01-19-2013 07:16 PM

Todd:

Not all 44C & 50C mower decks had front gauge wheels. CPE-2B shows only rear wheels. At some point in the production of this series of decks, front wheels were introduced. That series of deck ran from the IH days in 1979 to the CCC Days until 1985. I have a 44C and 50C and they both have front wheels.

Matt G. 01-19-2013 07:40 PM

I think those front wheels were a CCC addition.

zippy1 01-19-2013 09:03 PM

Thank you gentlemen! I just didn't now, because my 782 was built in early 81 (CCC) and by the Parts Tree it showed front deck wheels. And mine don't.

Did a little to the 44C deck today.
Idler arm assembly and shoulder bolt were seized together. So it went into the heat box and with a little persuasion it came apart.
It (idler arm) is somewhat rough inside. I used some emery cloth and cleaned it up inside where the shoulder bolt moves free. Do any of you think this will be ok, it's not sloppy loose or tight by any means. Or should I be on the lookout for a different one? Opon assembly, do you just grease it up and put it together? There is no grease zerk on the idler, and it's to thin to add one.
Also cleaned up the deck hangers and shot some primer on them. The deck will be taken into the sandbasters, to cold here for me to do it outside. (-3 right now)
One last thing. Is the paint color 935 for this deck?
Thanks

dag1450 01-21-2013 08:40 PM

Zippy1, That big shoulder bolt that holds the idler arm to the deck should have a zerk fitting on top. Maybe older ones did not have them but all the ones i have do or did have a fitting, some brake off. What i dont understand is why there is no hole in the sheet metal belt cover for this grease fitting.Looks great, maybe while u have the welder out u should strenthen the rear wheel bracket on the discharge side. and yes 935 is the right color.Dave

Matt G. 01-21-2013 10:12 PM

The newer version of that idler pivot bolt had a grease fitting, and I think they added a hole to access it in the deck cover at the same time. No reason you can't add one.

Got the lift frame sanded and painted along with the rear hangers and one pulley.
Started to get into the spindles. RUST! Seems I can't get the spindle cups off, so more PB and try them again tomorrow.

ACecil 01-23-2013 10:47 PM

The new paint is looking good, Todd!

zippy1 01-24-2013 09:27 PM

Thanks Allen.
I was looking through the net tonight, and knowing my deck id. plate indicates it's a 44C, but everything indicates it's a 44A.
Looking at the spindles, they seem to be the style of the A. Plus the A style deck doesn't have the front gauge wheels.
But it seems the id. plate has never been removed, so I have no reason to think it's been replaced.
I know Roland mentioned the C. style deck was used from 1979 till 1985, but shouldn't that style deck have the other spindles?
Thanks

inspectorudy 01-24-2013 10:34 PM

When I took my cups off the spindles I left the big nuts on the end but not all the way on and whacked them with a piece of sheet metal between the nut and the hammer. They came off real fast.:beerchug:

macman81 01-24-2013 11:53 PM

44a had the 1/2 pulley for quietline and 44c had 5/8 pulley for 82 and newer series. xtreme motorworks makes front wheel mounts that you can weld on to add them easily. i did it last year and glad i did. no more rolling sod when i turn corners

zippy1 01-25-2013 12:16 AM

Thanks guys. But it really don't matter, it's just that I'm anal about things that don't make sence in my head. Especially when a picture shows one thing, and mine is another.
The spindle thing has really got me hung up on it being an A not a C. For instance if I needed to purchace a new spindle, what would I order? They are both different.

Got to do a little yesterday on the deck.
Here's a picture of another spindle. Rust, rust.

ACecil 01-26-2013 10:22 PM

That's a lot of rust!

dag1450 01-26-2013 10:23 PM

Todd, About a month ago i restored a 44 c and it sounds like we have the same decks , old style spindles and no front gauge wheels. I had a scrap 50 c with new style spindles and front wheels. I cut off the 50's front wheel brackets and welded them on the 44. I like the look with front wheels, i dont know why. I also ran a 3/8 steel rod around the bottom edge of the deck and boy did that make the deck strong without changing the looks. Dave

Thanks for the tip. I was so wondering if the tag was switched by someone, being everywhere I looked, it looked like a A. deck. Not an C.
i have an old 44 LT deck I could get the front front wheel brackets from. But the spindles are un greasable.
The old style spindles were throwing me off.

dag1450 01-27-2013 06:34 AM

Yea my old 44 spindles looked just as nasty as yours, a wire brush and lots of grease i put them back in because they were tighter than the 50's. I wanted to replace the 3 big (but thin) pulley nuts that were on the 44 but could not find a good replacement so i used the old ones. I will try to post some pics of my 44 c later today. Dave

Matt G. 01-27-2013 09:14 AM

That's a "C" deck...MTD didn't change the spindles to the aluminum housing style until the mid to late 80s.

Thanks,
Got two spindles apart today. Three days of PB Blaster and a little light pounding with the hammer and they finally broke loose.
The bearings are good, no binding or internal rust, but a lot of pitting on the outside.
Spindle housings are pitted pretty bad also, but I managed to get both the bearing and housings cleaned up with the wire wheel and drill press.
(no picture of the bearing cleaned up)

Looks like you r cleaning it up real good. Every part or surface that got put together got a thick layer of grease, even the big spindle stiffing plate. I coated the whole thing and layed it down and let it mush out when bolted together. Thats the red grease u see. Dave

Got a little more done on the deck today.
Never know what you'll find when you take something apart to see what's on the inside:biggrin2:

You guys are doing some nice work on those decks, when you’re done and if you are bored I have a couple 60” Habans that you can overhaul. :beerchug:

Todd,
Found you deep into another project. Doesn't look like those spindle assemblies had been serviced for a day or to! Your clean up and restore looks good as usual!
Regards,
Chris

zippy1 02-03-2013 07:46 PM

This isn't going to be a very exciting post. (no pics, so maybe it never happend)
Got my deck back from the blaster Thurs. they soda blasted it and sprayed sealer on for me, all for a grand total of two cases of Coors Light:beerchug:
They told me they didn't want to chance warping the deck, or blowing through one spot that was a little thin.
So today I cut out the thin spot and welded in a patch and got it ground smooth and primed the bad spot. Wet sanded the outside and put on two coats of color. Now in a couple days I'll wet sand it again and put on a final coat or two. Then start getting things put back together.
I'll do a better job of pictures next time. (slacker)

ACecil 02-03-2013 10:15 PM

Appreciate the update, Todd.

machinehead323 02-04-2013 03:42 AM

Great looking work on the decks. I have a 50" deck without the front wheels, it just has those loops. i think im going to get a set of the front brackets from extreme motor works. i think those are what i need, but they do not look like they have the jog in the top of the one bracket like the original set.

Methos 02-04-2013 01:04 PM

Great updates Todd. We'll get over not seeing pics this time, I think.:NailBite:

Good news, I got the 44C deck finished today!!!
I did mess up on the decals though, dumby ordered the wrong ones:bash2: But I'm not going to remove them and re-order new ones, they will do just fine, by mid summer they'll be all scratched to heck anyway.
All in all I think it turned out pretty good. Anything is better than what it was:bigthink:
Man's got to eat, so a few venison hot dogs on the stove and we're good to go:beerchug:

Sam Mac 02-05-2013 07:32 PM

Awesome job on the deck. Don't let Vince know you have hot dogs......:biggrin2:

Cubcrazy 02-05-2013 08:36 PM

Nice job on the deck Todd!
The dogs look good too!:biggrin2:
