Sickle mower?

I would love to have a sickle mower for one of my Cub Cadets.I have a creek that runs through my property and a sickle mower would be very useful to mow close to the creek without hugging the banks. There are lots of other places where a sickle mower would be very useful. But,I know they are rare and very expensive when one does appear for sale. I hate the thought of paying more for an implement than I did for any one of my 4 tractors!
So,how many different manufacturers made sickle mowers (side mount) for Cub Cadet use? Were there different length bars?
Anyway,I will keep my eyes open for a sickle mower or a hens tooth, whichever comes first. LOL!

The only ones im aware of were made by haban and had a 4ft bar. I have one and even though I dont use it alot it is fairly handy. Good luck with your hunting!

Haban made theirs which is the most"popular" but didier made one briefly for the cubs, but mainly deeres. Jiffy balling made a front mount

These Didier mower's are pretty cool, hydro driven, unfortunately every one I've seen for sale has been a bit pricey compared to the Haban. :coffee:

There is one on epay right now, it's a little far from you but not a lot farther than I drove to get mine.

Thank goodness someone scouped it up before I lost my self control

Maybe I could tempt you you with the one I have.:biggrin2::biggrin2:

New Jersey IS a long drive from Tennessee.

That Didier is "the bomb" !

BanditCub 02-21-2013 02:52 PM

were they made for NF tractors only?

Jumper 02-21-2013 09:20 PM

BanditCub: No, I have seen them on wide frames also. (I can't seem to find my picture of one on a wide frame):BangPC:

Haban 402-E was made for the Wide Frames, 1X8/9 and Quiet Lines.

Haban 402-D was for Narrow Frames.

Not 100% sure but I believe there were others for Narrow Frames 402-A, 402-C, and a 402-F (probably for a Wide Frame).

I wish someone who really knows would post the model numbers and what they were suposed to fit.

Two weekends ago I took the 402-E off of my 128 and put it on my 106. I didn't find anything that seemed different, and I didn't have to make any modifications/adjustments. That's not saying that something wont "show up" after I use it more.

gcbailey 02-22-2013 07:25 AM

there is a Haban users group on Yahoo. Lots of good info regarding all things Haban. I've got a few videos of my 402-D on my youtube page. One thing about it, you definitely need counter weight if you're going to be using it on a slope!

darkminion_17 02-22-2013 06:28 PM

Yosemite Sam..
I do believe you flip the drive pulley so it will line up with the NF pto better.

The 402-e was $312.00 in 1972

Thanks for posting that brochure. The fact that it can be used to cut at angles and on slopes makes it even more useful (and desirable).

Yosemite Sam 02-23-2013 02:05 AM

I read someplace about flipping the pulley over but I thought that was for putting it on a Quiet Line (I suffer from CRS so I may be wrong).

Back in 1972, one would REALLY need a sickle mower to justify spending $312.00 for it. Interesting fact, thanks for sharing.

Funny how some things really hold their value.

I dont know about you guys, but running it vertical is a little spooky with the sickle bar screaming right next to your right side lol. They are quick little suckers.

haban cutting verticle

Sam S I have used my haban to trim neighbors shrubs and usually just idling and in my case I did not feel too close to cutter

"Safety" was not much of a priority back in the 70s

Oak 02-23-2013 07:41 PM

That dude in the picture needs a cigarette in his mouth and a beer in his left hand! I don't think they could sell those today. :biggrin2:

Yosemite Sam 02-24-2013 02:09 AM

I would kinda like to cut vertical along the fence row, to keep the neighbors brush outta my yard, we'll have to see how comfortable I am with it after a little more use.

Not sure but it looks like there is a beer bottle sticking up between the guys left leg and the hood of the tractor.

dagenham 02-24-2013 09:01 AM

I think that is the pto lever Sam.
I was thinking the guy on the tractor looks like he's scared to death of that blade being so close to him. I dont think I blame him either.

darkminion_17 02-24-2013 07:17 PM

I think the guy is excited in a different way...
