The ORIGINAL Family Effort!
4 Attachment(s)
These Cubs are starting to turn into a family affair! :biggrin2:
My brother got me into them a few years ago and now my older son and i are pulling our Original. My younger son has shown some interest (and has driven the "O" around a little bit). He also said he'd work on one with me, if we had one. Well, turn out that I found another Original and it's only 1,100 miles away. But, it's right down the road from my sister, so, I bought it and she went to pick it up with her hubby tonight. She sent me some pictures but that's all I've got right now until my brother (who happens to be headed up there with a trailer for his job) will be able to bring it down in about a week. He lives about 5 miles from me and will bring it down to FL when he heads home. It's going to take some work but most of the parts are there that I'll need. The PO said that he got it from the original owner who bought it new. He hadn't had a chance to get it running but it does spin over but doesn't have spark. It could be something as simple as the points or ? It'll have to wait until it gets home to figure that one out. There's some real "craftsmanship" on this one but, I think that if we can get it running, we'll clean it up, tear it down and give it a quick shade of yellow and cream. I'm working on a set of clam-shell fenders for it and I'm thinking about making it a narrow front end. Should be pretty cool, don't you think? I've already got a puller, so this one would be more of a driver/show tractor. Although, I typically don't do spit and polish restorations. This one will still have to earn its keep from time to time. Main thing is that it'll give me and the younger son something to work on together. That'll be fun. Here's the pix until the ol' girl finds her way home. |
Nice find C5rider
Should be a fun project  |
Congrats on the O pickup!:beerchug:

Awesome score! Great to see the family getting into the cubs!
|
Nice find on your O!
|
Thanks guys!
From what I can tell, it's mostly all there, except for those few areas that have been "bubba'd" :bash2: Sis gave me the numbers on the frame and it indicates that she was built in May of '62, about three months before my other one came down the line. Looking forward to getting her home so I can start progress! First will be to see if she runs..... :NailBite: |
That's awesome Andy. I'm officially jealous. 2 O's! There's one between where me and you live that has a bad and is yard art that the guy won't sell because he said its his grandsons but it's been rusting in their front yard for a long time. I think its time for a group effort. :biggrin2: nice job on that one though, what state is it coming from?

It's actually a bit of a surprise for Austyn. He's been sitting on the original "Original" and I asked him at the show if we found one, if he would work on it with me. He SAID yes. He still doesn't know that it's on its way down here. I'm trying to keep it a surprise for him. :biggrin2: I think he'll like it. At least, when we get it finished he will. where is that other one that you're speaking about? May have to do a recon-run. :bigthink: |
Spoke with Bro.
Tractor should be here on Wednesday! :beerchug: :biggrin2::biggrin2::biggrin2::biggrin2::biggrin2: |

Bro called and said he was home and I should hot-foot it over there to get my new pride and joy.
I was really anxious to see it since a fuzzy photo covers a multitude of sins. :biggrin2: Well, the ol' girl isn't terrible. Ain't pretty either! There's a lot to work with, but a lot more to work ON. My younger one and I spent some time out in the garage tonight cleaning her up and doing some tinkering. I was really curious to see how that fender idea was going to shape up and I must say, I think it'll work pretty good. Something different for sure. The big question is, exactly how to mount them. Not sure if I want to mount them higher or lower with the tires. I'll include a photo of both. There will be some serious re-wiring going on since EVERY wire in that thing is now yellow! Brittle, cracked and yellow. I looked inside the tank and I swear, there were things lookin' back at me! There are some severe fitment issues with the hood and the steering wheel/dash tower. It's like it's mounted about a 1/4 inch too far forward! It's all coming apart so we'll get to the bottom of it all soon enough. The nice thing is that we're not concerned at all about numbers and stuff. Just looking to make a nice tractor for the boy when we're done. He was really excited about it and wants to take the keys in to school to show his teacher who is also into Cubs. I think he's hooked. |
Congrats on your O! Good luck with it!

Congrats on getting the O home.
It looks in pretty good shape! |

Thanks!
Spent a few more minutes on the "O" and sorted a few more things out. Funny how POs (or current ones for that matter :biggrin2: ) will spend so much time "fixing" things by drilling, welding or cutting stuff, rather than putting it back together PROPERLY! :bash2: For example. I put the throttle lever back into position. Since it was a long-distance endeavor, I saw the throttle lever was out of place, but didn't know if that was because someone replaced it for some reason and the new one didn't fit under the dash or ? THANKFULLY, they only drilled two more holes instead of cutting out the dash! Turns out that the original throttle lever was still there, they just mounted it "outboard" for some reason! I'd say it was so that they didn't have to deal with the small screw that holds the wire, since it can be a bear to get loose/tight since you can't get a screwdriver on it right. But, wasn't it more of a hassle to drill two more holes? :bash2::bash2::bash2: Sometimes, finding out "stuff" about our latest aquisitions is part of the fun! I "un-earthed" this jem which tells me that preventive-maintenance might not have been high on their list. When's the last time you've seen one of these belts? :biggrin2: Also put a different hood on the ol' girl. Still kinda fits the "patina". |
Our "O" had the same setup and I have seen pics of several others that the same thing was done.

Update
SHE RUNS!!!!! :beerchug:
P.O. said that it didn't have spark. Filed the points a little bit, made sure they were makin' and breakin' and I started to see a spark. I ran some fuel to it and spun it over a few times and she fired up. The S/G has some funky noises in it and there's a bunch of loose ends to tidy up. But it runs. Actually, it runs pretty good! I took it for a ride around the neighborhood and the clutch and trans works fine. The brake even works surprisingly well. Only thing that isn't working 100% is the charging system. I think the regulator is suspect. I'll be doing a total re-wire so, I'm not worrying about it right now. I'll put a new one on when I put it back together. I LIKE my little tractor! :biggrin2: Oh, and I cleaned out the fuel tank as best I could. There were some chunks hiding in there, and a few still are! Got most of them with various solvents, brushes and elbow grease. I put it all back together and put some fuel in it. Wasn't sure what would happen but, so far it's holding fuel. Good day all around! Now that I know that it runs, I get to tear it all apart and make it pretty! |

Gotta love it, a 50 year old tractor back to life. :beerchug:

Great news! Glad you got your cub running again!
|
Congrats and glad you got it home and running!
|
Here's a short video of our son taking a tour of the back yard.
This for it's age, this thing REALLY runs quite well! http://youtu.be/-RiXvbYcFz4 |
Cool vid. What did you use for the camera?
|
I have two, one is a FLIP vid camera and I also have a RE-PLAY camera on a magnetic mount. Both work pretty well for what they are.
Glad you liked the video! |
Neat vid! Thanks for sharing.

Spent some time working on the ol' girl today. Pulled the dash tower and tightened up the steering column. Didn't rebuild it, yet, just took out a few yards of free play that were installed by the PO via a bent pivot arm on the box. straightened everything out and now it works fairly well. Amazingly, all of the bolts for the tower, the steering column and the foot pads/lift arm came out without any drama.
Straightened out the frame where the grille bolts on so that the hood fits properly. I figured that someone "bumped" something and tweaked the frame slightly. Some slight taps and it fits! Got some fresh tires for the front end and will get them on there once we've had a chance to paint these wheels. It's really starting to grow on me! :biggrin2: |
Glad you're enjoying your O!
|
Nice job Andy. Sow where are you getting tires around our neck of the woods?
