782 Yes or No
Hey Guys
It has been a while since I have been on here. I sold my 1450 a while back and have not been able to find the right Cub. I was at my local hardware store the other day and got to talking to the owner and somehow got on the subject of IH Cub Cadets. He then told me that his mower repair guy used to have a cub cadet that he worked on here in the shop. He had recently passed away and the old cub cadet was in the basement of the building and he was about to scrap it. He said if I could figure out a way to get it out then I can have it. He said he knew nothing about it, but knew it had been down there forever. He walked me down into the basement and to my surprise I saw a dust covered red cub cadet. It has about an inch of dust on it. I started cleaning it off to see what it was and it turns out its a 782. The Bad- It had the series 1 engine that had blown. They had actually taken the engine out and meanwhile lost most of it. So it has no engine. The good- It had less than 250 hours when it blew and had been parked in that basement since then. SO other than dust it looks brand new. Everything is in perfect condition including the decals and chrome hub caps. Turns out it has been sitting in the basement for 30 years. It has the sleeve hitch and mower deck as well. So now the question is what do i do with it? It has no engine but everything else is there. Is it worth putting a new engine in or should I just part it out? I am not sure if it sitting for 30 years is a good thing or a bad thing. As far as condition goes it looks great because it has barely been used. I am picking it up on Saturday but the tires are completely flat and dry rotted. Also how do I get the transmission to disengage? Thanks for any input your guys can give. Brian So no |
The trans should have the auto valves in it so just push and it should move and with that low of a hour I would defiantly put a new engine in it or even better upgrade I bet it will clean up good and you would only he out what the engine costs . I would probably do a fluid and filter change in the rear as well
|
I would fix it up. Install another engine and change the fluids and you're ready to go for years. The 782 is a great cub!

If it's a IH 782 all the info in my thread will help you out with your re-power.

782's are easy to repower. I wouldn't dream of parting it out with only 250hrs
|
Get the tractor and FIX it up
:IH Trusted Hand: |
Fix it!:beerchug:

Fix it with the Series II or better yet, a magnum and you will have something most everyone wants,
A true "barn find" they don't happen like that very often. |
Keep you eyes out for a 2185 and put the CH18 from it in the 782.
|
Wow! Sounds like a nice find. Don't part that tractor. Repower it. Can't wait to see some pics.

Ok so I will repower it. Mow to figure out what I want to repower it with. I found this here locally. I know you used a 18HP magnum and this is a 18.5 magnum from a sears. Think it would work?
ALso how heavy are these engines. WIll I need to rig an engine puller or can two guys lift them out and put one back in? Thanks for the encouragment. |
My son and I just last night installed a command 18 by just picking it up and putting it in place. It has some weight but not too much for two people to handle. We have done the same thing with a command 20.

Engine swap

If it were me I'd PASS. The engines in those are expensive to replace. But then again, I'm not a 782 guy, and I'm not knocking how well they work.

fix it:beerchug:

With two guys it is a joke, lifting it in/out. If you are patient you can find a mag and not break the bank. How often do you fing a low hour red rose like that? almost NEVER! You could put in a expensive engine, use it a lifetime and it still would be nicer than what you can buy today and less expensive! But that is just my thoughts |

After talking to you guys I am pretty excited.
I just found this and plan on picking it up tonight. All the guy knows is its a 1987 cub cadet with a 18HP magnum. Looks to me from the gear shifter under the seat to be an 1806. Its missing the manual lifter and all but I would think it would have everything I need to repower my 782. Also has a 50" deck that looks to be in pretty good shape and he says tire are in good shape no dry rot. So there is my tires and engine. Will make a fine parts tractor I think.:biggrin2: The guy wants 300.00 for it. Does that sound reasonable. He says the engine turns over and runs for a minute but then dies. Says it has not been run in a while an probably needs a carb cleaning. |
OK here's the deal, Listen cause I'm only gonna say this one time. Buy both, clean the carb on the yellow toy and then sell it. Get the 782, take your time and look for a 2185, (should be a $300 or so deal) like I told you before. Take the engine out of the 2185 and put it in the 782. Sell the remains of the 2185 on C-List and you will probably come out close to even with a free engine. :beerchug:

Sam Mac has a great idea and you would have a newer engine that you can get parts for. But on the other hand you can lift the whole engine/wiring harness out of the 1810 and gain the low oil light. If you go that way you could have a running tractor in about four hours.I did the swap of a 1810/682 and it worked great.Just my two cents and you win either way good luck on your new 782 they are very nice machines.

Fix that bad boy!
|
Or you could sell it to a fellow cubbie for a couple hundred..hey I even have family down in Bama..lol
|
If it was me, I would take the Mag18 out of the 1806 and put it in the 782. Very easy swap. Keep the 1806 roller as a future donor to your 782 or just sell it as a roller.
|
Its a no-brainer. REBUILD!
|
That is a find that I dream of running across. It's like taking a time machine back 30 or so years and getting a brand new one! Several good suggestions for engines. I can't wait to see some pics.

Ok SO I am stoked right now. I went to get the 1806 for parts. I get there and was just shocked. the thing is in amazing shape other than the seat. This guy got it as a trade in on a new mower. He had absolutely no clue what it was. He said he just didn't want to fool with it because he couldn't get it to stay running and couldn't get it to move. I fooled with the carbourator for a bit and sat down and she fired right up in his showroom. I put her in gear and off she went. The mower is in great shape just needs paint. Belts and all look good. The only thing missing is the manual lift arm. Luckily I had already paid him and it was mine. She purred like a kitten. Her paint is nice and shiny and and no rust anywhere. THe engine compartment is so clean and original. THis thing really has never been touched. It has brand new carlisle ag tires. The guy that traded it in bought it new and just cut his small yard with it. Then parked in their garage. SO NOW I JUST GOT A NEW CUB CADET!!!!. Now back to hunting for a parts mower my 782.
Anyone know much about these 1806 models? Funny This morning I asked the question if I should get the 782. End of the day I own a 782 and a 1806. All for 300.00 My heard is growing. I will get you guys some pictures tomorrow. |
Congrats on what sounds like an awesome 1806!
Can't wait to see the pics! |
That's how it happened for me. I has been searching parts for my 72 when I came across a pretty nice 71. Well, the 71 never became a parts supply for the 72. Two tractors are better than one tractor!
Sounds like you're in to something good! :Woo: |
cubs
Congrats on two fine machines. I put a mag 18 out of an AYP in my 582. Mike:beerchug:

That 782 sounds like a once in a lifetime find. It is certainly worth the price a repower. I bought a 782 with a series 1 and repowered it with a 25hp Kohler V twin. It has plenty of power and drives like a dream. I live in Enterprise if your interested in looking at the engine installation, it was fairly simple overall.
|
That 1806 would make a pretty cool plow tractor with the manual tranny and 18hp motor. Only downside would be the manual lift but you could put a spring assist on it if it already doesn't have one.
|
Congrats on your 1806! It and the 782 will make nice tractors for you. For future reference, please post about your 1806 in CCC/MTD built GT's section. :beerchug:

I vote for putting an engine in the 782 and gettin it goin. I pickup up a clunker 782 that I'm rebuilding, trust me stripping one down and painting it is a lot of work. You don't have to paint this one so you are are half way there already. Hubcaps are hard to come by, you have those. You have the sleeve hitch. Give this old tractor a new lease on life!
|
I'd pull the engine out of the 1806 and put it in the 782. Then you'd pretty much have a brand new 782 with an engine that was better than the original series I. :TwoCents:
Then you could hold onto the 1806 and eventually find a different power plant. |
I'd say keep the 1806 like it is and find another engine for the 782. The Mag 18's are sweet!
|
I'm Glad you made the move and aquired them! Your gonna really like that 782 I'm sure!!
