Are you "old school" Cub?

I'm just curious and wondering how much seat time the membership here has logged.

I'll be 34 on 5/31 this year... I've been running cubs for 29 years (started on Dad's 127, then Grandpa's 102, then Grandpa's (now mine) 149, and then my 1650... all 4 are in the family still)...

So... As I approach 30 years with my butt in an Cub seat I'm wondering who else is old school and/or die hard? :)

(Earliest memories and favorite stories would be AWESOME!!!)

TheIHMan 05-14-2013 10:05 PM

My dad might have you all beat. He has been riding cubs since he was a kid. His brothers bought a 122 brand new and that was when he was six, and is fifty two now.

TheIHMan 05-14-2013 10:06 PM

One cool thing that he has told me is that like tractors you could trade in Cub Cadets for new ones. I think he said they traded the 122 for a 1250 way back when.

cubby102 05-14-2013 10:14 PM

i think i've logged abotu twice your 34 just over this winter! i love using the cub for everything even if i am able to do it without a cub i do it just because i can!

Now that I have that oil-sipper under the hood, I drive it just to drive it!

I bought a 108 off a guy that had initially bought an original and a IH pickup.

He traded them BOTH in every three years until he got the 108.

He hauled the tractor in the truck to a dealer that carried both, then hauled home the new tractor in the new truck.

Then he switched to Chevrolet pickups.

A year later I bought his '81 Chevy truck also.

He moved to FLA, and didn't need either.

Me, I have only had a Cub Cadets since 1980.

Maxwelhse 05-14-2013 10:58 PM

HA! You guys are awesome! :)

Double my 34 years in a winter? Pissssah... I've been plowing snow with cubs personally since 1985.... ;) That is the exact reason I bought my QA-42 a few years back... However, my Simplicity 555 (noticing a trend for my passion of power equipment from "the day"?) hasn't given me a reason to mount it up!

------

The guy that sold his IH pickup off in favor of Chevy's really missed the boat.. I say that as an owner of 2 GM pickups ('01 S-10 LS, '74 GMC 4x4 SuperCustom [one owner if you count me and my Dad as a single owner]), and a former member of IH's (ahem... sadly... "Navistar") engineering group (Medium Duty Powertain, Mechanical). The IH stuff is built like a brick outhouse... Chevy was cheaping out even in the '70s.

I would just about kill a man to come up with a nice clean Scout, second only to my desire to own a '73-'75 K-5 Blazer (with FULL convertible roof) to match my '74 GMC pickup! Pretty blue and white twins in the garage... That would make be a happy boy! :)

I've already seen a Scout II dressed in the exact same colors as my GMC... It looked awesome! So... That's on the table as well!

I bought my 1973 model 108 in 1978, used, from a Cub dealer for $1500. It was a huge investment for my wife and me at the time, having just bought our first house. But we had 2 acres and needed something to cut all that grass. We sold that house in 1981 and bought our current place. With about 7 of our 10 acres in grass, I use a bush hog on my blue tractor to do the pastures, and used the 108 for the couple acres around the house until we bought the orange tractor. The 108 has been down at the river house cutting over an acre every week since 2006.

So that gives me, what, 35 years in the seat of the 108?

cubby102 05-14-2013 11:04 PM

lmao my bad i thought ya ment 34 hours. eather way give me a few years ill catch up :beerchug:

Maxwelhse 05-14-2013 11:23 PM

@Saw: But... but... but.. You kinda wussed out with those other colors... ;) I mowed grass with a my good old school 2 cycle lawn boy (it's green. but not a tractor) for 3 years before I became a home owner... Ever since then (despite 1 time mowing "the field" [3 level acres] with Dad's 2210 Deere, and the summer of meltdown on my 1650) I've been rocking an IH Cub exclusively.

(I'm not intending to cause offense... If I had my way I would have Kubota tractors from here to eternity)

@Cubby: LOL!!! It's cool! More seat time in a good old Cub is something we all need! Perhaps I'm nostalgic for all of those many hours spent mowing over 8 acres with a 44A (or smaller) in my youth?

cubby102 05-14-2013 11:35 PM

yea im 25 now and been mowing since 8. ive been on deers murrays cubs kobotas and some that i couldnt begin to know what was, but been o na cub steady for about 13 of those. which is by far my favorite. also like mowing with my little mustang every now and then just for kicks...neighbors get a good laugh outta it too

J-Mech 05-14-2013 11:51 PM

I've been driving cub cadets, along with my dad, grandad, and great grandad.... (lol) since i was old enough to be let on the seat. I started out moving stuff around the barn lot with dad's red 782 when I was about 5 or 6. (This will show my young age.) That would have been in 1985. Grandad has a 1969 71 he bought new. (Not currently running) I mowed yards in the country. All bare min of 1 acre. Some of them 2+. I use my cadet like a tractor. I have no idea how many hours I've logged behind the wheel. I know that the 782 had about 3000-3500 hours on it when dad got rid of it. And I'm sure I put 3/4 - 2/3 of them on it. I know on mine I average around 100 hrs a year..... so I guess I'm old school.

@J: That sounds old school as all else! :)

@Cubby: I just wish I had the heart "Monster Garage" my 'Mustang' into mowing duty!

Yosemite Sam 05-15-2013 12:15 AM

All things considered, I guess I'm fairly new to the Cub Cadet world, I got my first, a 109, from a Great Aunt after my Uncle passed in 1990.

I hafta agree with cubby102 though, I do things with my Cubs that I don't even need a Cub to do them with.

I don't get all the seat time that I want but I do get quite a bit.

cubby102 05-15-2013 12:16 AM

Haha I wish they never stopped that show. That was the first episode wasn't it?

J-Mech 05-15-2013 12:16 AM

Here is something kind of funny I didn't mention... I said I mowed yards as a kid in the country.... Well, we farmed, and my dad drove a truck. Since he was gone about 3-4 days a week, and when he was home he was farming.... I had to drive the cadet to where I had to mow. I have driven the old 782 about 5-6 miles away to mow!!! LOL! My grandad's house was 2 miles, and I mowed his yard. I literally wore the tires off of a home made trailer we had that I hauled gas and the weed eater in!!! Ohhhh, GOOD TIMES!! :beerchug:

zippy1 05-15-2013 01:52 AM

[QUOTE=J- I literally wore the tires off of a home made trailer we had that I hauled gas and the weed eater in!!! Ohhhh, GOOD TIMES!! :beerchug:[/QUOTE]

Weed eater? Was no such thing when I was a young'un. Corn knife!
Anyway, I started with a push mower. Then pa bought a used 76 and I thought I was walking on high cotton, had the world by the butt! Used to take about four hours with the rider, a lot longer with the push:angry:
1992 I bought a brand new CC 1330 LT (I KNOW IT'S NOT A REAL ONE) and I average about 100 hrs. a year = 2100 total, up until 2010 when I picked up my first real IH tractor.
Now I use them at times, but still use the LT the most. Plenty of seat time, but old school is anyone's definition.

fpatd 05-15-2013 05:25 AM

Old school.... Owned plenty of "tractors" or shall i say given to me since 1975 to cut 12 to 15 lawns a week 1/4- 1-1/2 acre lots, got my first cub for my dad in 1990, still own it today.... But all the rust piles of other machines couldn't hold a candle to our cub, as everybody says " nothing runs like a deere"..... Thats why i bought a cub!:beatdeadhorse:

Merk 05-15-2013 05:57 AM

I've leared how to plow with a moldboard plow and IH Cub Cadet 122 in 1968. That was 45 years ago.

Sam Mac 05-15-2013 06:36 AM

I've been killing grass on a Cub since 62 when my Uncle bought an O.

Jumper 05-15-2013 10:12 AM

Wow this thread really brings back some memories about the old day's, my Dad bought a new model 71 back in late 1963 or early 64 when they 1st came out. I think I was 8 yoa at the time, I still have that little machine in the garage waiting for a rebuild yet. Thanks for the reminder !

johncub7172 05-15-2013 10:32 AM

My first IH Cub Cadet was a Original. About 12 years of age, back in '89, I was driving it to work pumping gas when gas was .79 cents a gallon. I lived in the country all my life so you could get away with stuff like that. I get a lot of time driving my 71. My 72 is a work in progress.

I had a 73' GMC 1 ton, and was nothing cheap about it then. But I agree with putting the gas tanks inside the frame. With a 14-bolt 456 Dana rear, big/thick frame,9 leaf from factory on each side, and huge brakes the truck was a power house. Later it had a bran new, 7k Chevy Vortec 383 stuffed in it. {Summit Racing is down the road from me} I also seen a 49' International pickup drag a new Dodge Cumming turbo diesel around in a tug of war like a rag doll.

But having my cub cadets, I have had a lot of fun!:beerchug:

ACecil 05-15-2013 11:16 AM

I've been into Cub Cadets for 10 years now. My first was also an Original. Been around IH tractors my whole life, as my grandpa was a farmer, and used IH equipment. My first tractor was a Farmall Cub, I got it in the Summer of 1996.

IH Cub Cadet 71s were produce between 1965 to 1967.

Dad bought his 125 before I was born, and that was over 28 years ago. He got it from a guy that rolled it in a ditch, so to this day, it has a replacement dash from a 105 (still says "105" cuz he doesn't really care too much about cosemetics) a bent steering wheel, and a mule drive from a 122 because someone cut off the quick attach.

I've been "driving" that machine since I was old enough to sit up on my own. Dad used to put me on it while he did outside chores because it was a good babysitter.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...ki/meon125.jpg

I've blown the engine on it at least 3 times using it since I was about 15 when I was allowed to go solo. We used it to mow and to rototill. Alas, I'm very partial to the narrow frames. Dad also bought a CCC (but still red) IH 782 and it didn't speak to me like the 125 did. I don't get to operate either much anymore (and he still has both).

When I turned 27 and had my own place, I bought a 147. Driving it reminds me of all the fond memories I have of his 125. IH Cub Cadets are all I've known and haven't seriously used anything else since. I guess you can say that's "old school." :biggrin2:

I first sat my butt on Grandpa's Original in May of '61, so I guess it's been 52 years or so. My Dad bought the 102 in March of 67 which was the first serious mowing I did on one.

PaulS 05-15-2013 07:55 PM

My dad bought an O in 1963 and I had a bunch of seat time with that little tank. I bought my first cub in 75 or 76 a 102 and still have it. I used that tractor for mowing moving dirt and snow and hauling firewood. In fact I don't think the muffler ever got completely cold. Between my son and I we have an O, 2 102s, a 149, a 2072, a 2084 and a 2086 with an offbrand thrown in there too. I use one or the other nearly every day of the week. Last evening my 12 yr old granddaughter wanted to drive the 2084 for the first time. Although I did so reluctantly I jumped off to give her the seat. So I suppose that this may infect another person with cub fever.

gcbailey 05-15-2013 08:09 PM

I knew Cyrus McCormick's great, great, great, great grandson who was a lead design engineer at IH back in the 50's. He ended up inventing the do-hickey that connects crank shaft to the left brake band. Anyways, he sold and early prototype (pre-cubbette) to my 2nd grade teacher's first wife's husband. Well this man didn't have a clue what to do with it since it didn't have a mowing deck and 5 wheels. He sold it to a man down in southern WV who raised tame llamas for nature trails. One day one of the llamas kicked the prototype and the man decided to get rid of it. I happened to be driving by that way and dickered around with him on the price and ended up having him give me about $600 and dinner to take it off his hands. I guess I've been around cubs for about 10 minutes now, so I'm pretty hard core old school..

cubfixer 05-16-2013 06:16 PM

When I was just out of college in 1976, my dad needed a new lawn mower. We had used several POS's that I used to keep the lawn mowed. We also had a '53 Ferguson tractor that I mowed and baled our farm with. One of my friends had a hardtop that I needed for my '68 Corvette, so we went from SW VA to Manassas, VA, to check out the hardtop. In the barn was setting a used Model 100. We liked it, but it would not start. We decided to take it anyway, and so the 100 came home with us.

My dad and mom mowed the lawn with it for several years. My dad passed away in '81, so my mom mowed the lawn for several years until the mower turned over on her on a very steep side yard in '91 (she broke both arms, both shoulder blades, a collarbone and 8 ribs). Ok now, she is one very tough lady! I convinced her t hat her mowing days were over and we hired a company to mow the yard. I took the mower to my house just to keep her off it Used it since then to mow my yard. Moved back to my mom's house to help her out in 1999, brought the 100 with me, and have used the 100 ever since. So I have been on it about 22 years.

Maxwelhse 05-16-2013 07:15 PM

Lots of really cool stories and great pictures!

Funny story from my Dad's 127 when he was using it as a "baby sitter"...

He had the battery charger on it, my sister and I were screwing around on the seat and fenders, generally rocking the tractor around, and for no good reason at all he decided that was the right time to fill up the gas tank.. 127 IN FLAMES, INSIDE THE GARAGE, and I never saw my Dad move that fast in his life for a fire extinguisher! :)

Cub and sis and I were all fine, but boy was Dad pissed!

Berwil 05-17-2013 10:45 AM

I feel like a wolf in sheep's clothing, I don't have much cub seat time. My dad had a mowing business when I was growing up and I started mowing when I was 7; I logged thousands of hrs on greene tractors. I bought a house in 2006 and needed a mower, after seeing the prices of greene tractors, I talked to my dad and he reminded me that my grandfather had cub cadets. I don't remember much of him because he passed when I was 5, but I do remember that silver hydro handle on the left side of the dash on his 105. I know exactly where that tractor is in Iowa still in use, I will be out to pick it up one of these days. Until then I have my "O" and 1450.

chadrisum 05-17-2013 10:01 PM

As a grandson/son of an IH dealership owner I've litterally have grown up on cub cadets and there big brothers for the last 36 years. I've probally have had some of the most diversified "seat" time as I had gotten to drive such a variety over the years. To come to think about it we never actually "owned" per say a cub cadet while we had the dealership. What ever trade ins we had was our mower and I would mow the small amount of grass at the implement dealership and then drive it over a mile to home and mow. That was the "cool" thing to do when your a young kid was to drive on the city streets. The only down fall was getting attatched to a tractor only to have it sold. One in particular was model 100 with ag dually's with a turned up muffler with the rain cap on it. Boy when your a little kid that was one awsome tractor then to only get it sold on you.

athomas 05-17-2013 10:17 PM

seat time

I started mowing for a neighbor when I was ten years old, that tractor was an original 61 or 62 model year, that was about 1965. Later in the 60's we got a 105 and I mowed and plowed snow for about 30 years with it. Currently I use a 109 for mowing and snow plowing, I have a 108 with a Danco loader and am in the process of restoring a 125 , I'll be 58 in a few days so that gets me about 48 years seat time on one cub or another ! Wouldn't want to do it any other way !

jdroison 05-18-2013 09:04 AM

never had a rider growing up as we mowed around the farm house with a 18" lawnboy. I was aways interested in how things worked as a kid and when I was about 8 dad came home to find me on the porch with the lawnboy tore down about as far as you could. by the time he had chores done I had i back together and it ran. this got me into small engine work in my teens and I drove my first cub "0" when a customer asked me to rering the engine for him. I loved driving that cub and a couple years later bought a 102. I got a job mowing the local drive inn theater for 3 summers, it took 8 hours to cut it with the 102. the third year I got a 147 and we cut with both of them. life got in the way and they got parked and not run for several years. then about 4 years ago a friend gave me a 2166 that had had a hard life. I mowed with it 1 year and cought the cub fever again and puchased a 1811, I avaerage about 100 hours a year on it. this spring I got a basket case 1872 and have it about 75% done. this along with all the hours I have put in on the farm with our M farmall and 2 farmall Regulars. still use a Regular to cultivate our sweet corn patch.

And I thought I was the only one that did that. My Dad took one look at me and said "You better be able to put that back together" That one almost went bad. :biggrin2:

I have been mowing with my 100 since i was able to walk. Love that tractor I grew up on it, so will my kids.
