Flail mower pickup

Picked up a Bush Hog GPF50-1 tow behind self-powered flail mower yesterday. CAD found it, sent me an e- about it, I went and got it. Owner said it didn't run, he thought it had carb problems. Yep it had carb problems along with no compression. The Broke + Scattered is getting replaced with a new bullet from Northern Tool. They have a 414cc Powerhouse (CHonda) for $300.00 with a 2 year warranty. Carb alone for the B&S is $140.00. Even though it needs a new engine it was a great deal.:beerchug:

Pics will follow so don't start. :biggrin2:

Grampie 05-18-2013 09:43 AM

OK Sam, We'll wait for you.

ACecil 05-18-2013 10:41 AM

Nice find, Sam!

_DX3_ 05-18-2013 02:14 PM

Alright Sam, you of all people know that this thread is worthless without pics. :biggrin2:

Cubcrazy 05-18-2013 05:10 PM

Congrats Sam but we are waiting on the pics!:biggrin2:

Here Be Da Pics :biggrin2:

The Broke & Scattered is trash and it is getting a new "Powerhouse" AKA Chonda from Northern Tool that CAD was nice enough to pick up and haul to my place on his way to Mt. Airy today that because it started to rain neither of us got to.

ACecil 05-18-2013 07:21 PM

That's nice, Sam!

Sam Mac 05-19-2013 07:12 PM

Got the new engine on it today, thing fired up on the second pull. Hope to give it the smoke test tomorrow. :biggrin2:

CADplans 05-19-2013 07:33 PM

Wet grass mowed by a flail mower kicks up a nice "vapor trail"! :bigthink:

:biggrin2:

Don't let a little rain stop you!!

Sam Mac 05-19-2013 08:29 PM

Hope to hook it behind the 2182 tomorrow and see what it will do. Never had a pull start engine that started as easy as this thing does. If it lasts I'll be one happy camper.:beerchug:

darkminion_17 05-19-2013 10:38 PM

How many blades does it have?

CubyFan 05-19-2013 10:38 PM

Great looking and unusual attachment. Like to see some action shots. Thanks for sharing!

I peeked under it, I do not think Sam and I could have counted that high, without missing lunch!! :bigthink:

:biggrin2:

Cubcrazy 05-20-2013 07:39 AM

Nice Sam!
Looking forward to the action shots!

This thing is so cool! I think it will do exactly what I want it to do. I have an area behind my place that I have been fighting to get grass to grow, all I want to do is knock down the high stuff and I want what I cut to say on the ground to help control erosion. Looks like I found the answer. Did a little test cut behind my shop with it today. The regular mower blows the cuttings away and cuts them to fine. :beerchug:

Good thing the Super in the pic has AGs on it!!

I did not want to see the Super with turfs pullin' it!!

Nope the 2284 with the turfs is just waiting for it's 3 point hitch and the new owner to showup. :biggrin2:

All nice and clean and resting.:beerchug:

scottmi65 05-20-2013 09:42 PM

I have a 84" flail mower pulled behind my Ford 420 and I love it. Nice and compact behind the tractor.

Cubcrazy 05-20-2013 10:26 PM

Nice action shots Sam!
That thing is cool!:beerchug:

CADplans 05-20-2013 10:39 PM

How fast can you pull it?? :bigthink:

My flail lets me travel 2X the speed of the same cutting with a rotary mower.

I guess it is because the grass is not mulched or "thrown' as much.

ACecil 05-20-2013 11:16 PM

Great pics, Sam! Glad the mower is working for ya!

zippy1 05-21-2013 02:36 AM

Looks like it does a fine job Sam:beerchug:

No idea how fast I can mow with it. The area I need it for is not golf course smooth and I don't feel like busting something. Besides that I'm old and slow anyway LOL. :biggrin2:

Well I cut the area behind the house today that I would be happy if weeds would grow on with the flail mower. It did just what I wanted it to do, I'm a happy camper. I also cut most of the lawn with it, would not recomend it for regular cutting. The Haban does a better job for a decent lawn. If I can ever get some kind of green stuff to grow on the hill in the back of the house I'll sell the Bush Hog but for now it's a cool grass killer. :biggrin2:

CADplans 05-21-2013 07:39 PM

I wouldn't sell the bushhog, I kind of think the bushhog is tougher, and will last longer when you are cutting grass that got out of control.

A two week hiatus from mowing, and I would bet you will be looking for the 26HP cranked tool rather than 12HP!! :bigthink:

Gotta admit it will go through 12" plus tall wet grass and not even slow down. Yeah I'll probably keep it. It won't break the bank. :biggrin2:

Flatbedford 05-21-2013 10:35 PM

I need one of those.... for about an hour.

ACecil 05-21-2013 11:26 PM

Looks like the mower did a nice job for ya, Sam!

Leadslingingdaddy 05-26-2013 09:32 AM

SWEET..!

If we ever get this property we have been looking at for the past year I need something like that!

Sam Mac 08-28-2014 08:12 AM

A little up date on the Powerhouse engine. Went to use it yesterday and even though I had drained the gas before storing it last year. Couldn't get gas into the carb. What ever they use for rubber to make the hoses is junk. Also all of the vent lines had cracked. Removed all the EPA crap and tossed in in the trash can. Pulled the float bowl off, spotless inside. Removed the float and needle blew it out and a chunk of hose came out. New hoses and back in biz. Gotta get an in line shut off because the one on the bottom of the tank is not completely shutting off.

Got it up and running then mowed some stuff that was to wet, tall and heavy for the Supers to deal with. This thing is evil, I had about 6 stumps that stuck up about 3", they were a PITA to deal with when using the Supers, now they are only about 1" tall. Granted they were pretty rotten but it did the job of a stump grinder.

Cub Cadet 123 08-28-2014 09:00 AM

Looks like a great piece of equipment. That would be really neat if you could hook it up in front of your mower so you didn't have to tread on the grass and squish it down first. Glad you landed it!

They want $500 for this one, if it was even relatively close I'd be on it after seeing how well yours does.

That is a killer deal ! Wish my mower was as nice as that one is. :beerchug:

Thanks for the link, I just listed it in the C-list area, hope one of our members picks it up.

PaulS 08-28-2014 11:47 AM

Sam that thing looks killer. Does it have any height adjustment other than pumping up the tires.

I have tried 3 different types of in-line fuel shutoffs so as not to have to access a difficult to reach tank shutoff.

I gave up,,,,,, the cheap in-line shutoffs let gas continue to flow.

I may, some day, go to
Air Power, Inc.

Salem, VA 24153

I think they will have a valve that shuts off,,,, :bigthink:

Yep you can bolt the wheel mounts in different holes.

John it's the factory shut off that wont shut off. Just put one of those cheap B&S plastic shut offs on, so far it's working.

If it wasn't so far away I'd own it already! I don't think you can beat the price either...
