50% More Air Filter, And It Cost LESS!!

I originally did this on a 128 Cub Cadet years ago. The Cub has the identical air filter as the Gravely 5665.

For some reason, the larger Kohler air filter cost less than the smaller correct size one for the Kohler 10 and 12HP K engine.

The ID and OD are the same, only it is 3" wide, instead of 1 7/8".

A coupling nut, two jam nuts, and a 1/4" x 20 stud was added to lengthen the air filter retaining stud.

The air filter is slipped on.

And the air filter cover is reinstalled.

So, I get 50% more air filter, save a few bucks on the air filter, and the only downside is I have to put the machine in when it rains.

Yea, like this machine will EVER be out in the rain!! :bigthink:

:biggrin2:

Will a 169 air filter make this look correct?

use the cover off a KT then the whole filter is covered , if you want more filter exposed then cut out part of the cover facing downward. still has a nice neat appearance. if you still want better flow K&N makes a filter that size. We've been doing this for close to 20 years . Works very good.

Will this fit inside the side covers of a ql?:bigthink:Cad when are you making your stack & mags for that gravely?:biggrin2:

nikster 08-28-2013 08:31 AM

Don't know but......

Does the foam needs to be have oil sprayed (soaked) on it for better catching the dust/junk floating in the air one kicks up?

Nik,

The 5665 came with a pepperpot muffler

I just switched to a stainless shielded "stack"

Will the wife be mad that I used her sewing scissors to cut out that stainless heat shield? :bigthink:

Nik,

I used to oil the prefilter, then I read that air going through the plastic prefilter will cause static electricity.

The static electricity will attract dust and capture it better than oil, so the prefilter is not oiled.
