Broke the pulling tractor
hey guys, fixed the midwest super cub clutch in my 102 pulling tractor, clutch worked great, loaded it with weight, went to the pull, and we were pulling great with pretty good traction, then at 2650lbs the rear end made a snap sound, turns out we broke the carrier, not the axles they are fine , so that wasnt a good pull, the whole rear was replaced awile ago too, everything was stock other than the clutch, so we removed the axles and broken carrier and started to wipe everything out, i am going to go with fine spline i think:bigthink::angry::bash2:
i have a great running stock 10hp kohler in the 102, it runs out of power when the sled starts to get really heavy, i am running 23 8.50 12 carlisle power trac ag tires on the back
stock carriers and axles don't cut it for pulling. top shafts and shift forks are not far behind.
what gear do you run that you run out of power? |
Our 10hp doesn't run out of power. It will spin before that.We only run 1st or 2nd and there stock gears and the motor only has the head shaved. And we haven't broke an axle or carrier but i'm putting a built 14hp in in the off season. And i'm putting a fine spline rear in and a hardened top shaft and all the good stuff because sooner or later it will break. :bash2::bash2:
....... ask cubcadet how much weight he has ON the tractor though....
It's the variable to the equation. |
i had 3 weights that are 225lbs each , so 675lbs total, one was in the middle, the other 2 were on the back , a heavy counter weight of a manhole cover cut in half , 3 steel plate slabs in the middle about 25lbs each, and 25lb wheel weights on each side and really heavy wheel weights on each side , so there was about 1000lbs on it:bash2:
We run classes 900 lbs 1100 lbs and then 1300 lbs this is with our club. Then at our local fair we pull with 1400 lbs 2 pulls.Pulling weight tranfer sled.So how much do you weight your tractor at cub.
Darn thats way to much if you ask me.But thats my opinion

I've seen stock carriers and axles break at #950. They just are not heavy duty enough for pulling applications.
yea i agree, i also should watch wheel weights on the axels although they were ok, i will change the weights around too
so how do i gear this thing down, will a creeper gear prevent it from losing power, or do i need a bigger engine:bigthink:
What are the rules for the class you pull in? Without knowing the rules it's hard for us to help you.
only rule is you need wheelie bars, we pull a dead sled with concrete blocks up to almost 4000lbs
So there is no rules in regards to engine hp or size.
Cheapeast easiest way to gear it down is put a shorter tire on it.... and don't use a creeper for two reason. One being itd be a major weak point as they were designed to just slow it down. Two being it makes your third gear slower then your current first gear.
I have never seen one with smaller back tires I would need other rims and alot of people use creepers for pulling in our club and u have to have a garden tractor so I'm assuming u can't have too much horse power but alot of them are 10 12hp one is 14 and one is a 1606 cub cadet but I don't know what engine I think I will just get a fine spline carrier and axels but do I need to measure the teeth on it to install it
Just remember if you get a 2 piece fine spline carrier you have to change ring gears. The one in a 2 piece is straight cut and the one in your cub now is curved cut.
do i need a cast iron ring gear:bigthink:
Use the ring gear off the carrier that broke if its still good.If not you need to find one like the one that came out of the carrier that broke.
mine broke, its no good, i might have another

thanks mike:beerchug:

ok guys, bought a nice used carrier with ring gear and bearings, its the heavier duty one, thanks ray :beerchug:
ok guys, how do you fit the carrier and ring gear with bearings already installed throught the back of the rear end , i cant get it to clear :bigthink:
Its a verry very tight fit. I managed to get mine in but it took a lot of fiddling I don't remember quite how it went but it did go. Glad to hear you got the parts to fix it
i pulled the bearing off, and assembled carrier, i then hit bearing back on and lubricated it , i shimed the carrier too , almost done:beerchug:

when you put bluing on the ring gear and spun it around what kind of wear pattern did you have? also how much backlash did you set up the ring gear to? and how much preload on the carrier?
alright guys, got the rear end in and filled it with new oil, it drives great and no noises, :beerchug:
