782 steering wheel removal?
How the %$&(&^$# does it come off? Bought a roller that must have been setting outside & the steering wheel splines are risted to the shaft. How do I get it off? I have used a 3 jaw puller but just screws up the plastic of the steering wheel.
Any suggestions? |
i will be having to do the same here shortly...plenty of play in it now...

Start by soaking it with PB blaster or AeroKroil everyday for about a week!
They can be stubborn! |
Seek & ye shall find!
This has been covered before & do a search & find out. Guys on this site are good by making gizmos that make the job easier. I'd give ya the link but i'm not that good.:BangPC: It will be worth your while. Nik, |
I tried soaking for a week and all methods I could think of. None worked.
Then I got this: http://www.harborfreight.com/14-piec...set-30305.html Popped it right off in 5 seconds. |

The wheels I had trouble with all had their caps on.

I took a 2"x4" block and used an appropropriately sized hole saw to cut a hole that would contact the plastic steering wheel base, but clear any obstructions, then i cut the block in half (half of the hole on each side) I did the same thing with a piece of plate steel, take all 4 pieces and a puller ( i used 2 jaws) put the cut steel plate around the column. put the cut wood block on top of the plate steel (so the seam is at a 90 degree angle to the plate. raise the whole pile up to the base of the steering wheel and while using your second and third hand hook the puller around the steel plate and snug it.
Then I put a ratchet on it and cranked on it there was a horrible pop, and the wheel was free, the column was undamaged, and I was thrilled |

Here's what I use. Sit on the seat and put your legs under the steering wheel. Use one of my hands to help pull, the other one holding the air chisel. Put the tip in the center of the steering shaft, pull the trigger while pulling as hard as you can. Usually..... they pop right off.

Good tip for the steering wheel removal.
Thanks |
Steering Wheel Puller
I made one from scratch with steel I had laying around, had I been thinking I would have checked Harbor Freight and save myself a lot of time. Mine works very good, but I had a lot of time invested in the construction. It would have been worth it to purchase one. On reassembly I used anti-seize lube to facilitate easier removal in the future. I used a new thrust bearing and washer and have much improved steering without any more lockups.

there are some on here that make a puller. I made one. but what was easy for me was taking the pin and cap off the bottom and screwed the nut on the top and gave it a few good smacks with a hammer.
be ready to catch the bearings in the bottom. and the and the thingyy in the side with the jam nut on it ,,,take it out first to. |
