Found in the woods

Hello all,
I am new here at only cub cadets, I would like to take a moment to tell you of my most recent find. Yesterday I stopped by a property of a friend of mine who passed away because I saw his daughter there burning trash, and by pure coincidence I had my trailer with me. This guy was an old lawn mower and tractor mechanic so he had a decent bone yard of mower stuff most of which has been picked through since his passing. I stopped to inquire about some trailer axles I was interested in purchasing, so she was pointing out where all the axle she knew off were. She pointed me through some brush and out of the corner of my eye I caught sight of a almost complete cub 100 almost completely hidden in the trees and brush. As my brother put it i didn't exactly 'play it cool" when I spotted the 100, but after verifying her price on the riding mowers that were complete and getting her permission to cut down a few trees, we began to recover the tractor. After a couple hours of cutting trees, clearing brush, digging, and fighting frozen ground she was out, and both parties were delighted that she had a new home.

:Welcome2: Wow!! That is a great rescue story--can't wait to see your pictures of it in an upcoming post/thread. I was going to warn you about yellow fever, but it sounds like you already caught it "in the woods".

Congratulations on the 100, Id like one of those. I just had a similar experience cutting down trees and fences and moving tons of junk and boat motors to get my latest two. Pictures please, take lots

darkminion_17 01-13-2014 07:44 PM

welcome to the fever...

I can wait for pics, post them at your leisure...

Cubby guy 01-13-2014 09:06 PM

Some guys have all the luck

All I have ever found I the woods is 'skeeters, snakes & skunks.

Congrats on the model 100 find. Hope it runs or is very easily fixable.

Never understood why some folks just leave things outside like that to rust away. My 800 cadet is rough, but it still mows the yard. Currently have the 38a deck off the tractor for spindle bearing work and blade sharpen.

Again, a tip of the hat on your find

Regards. Cubby Guy

You lucky dog! I wish I could get more stuff like that. It's always nice to see an ild Cub getting saved.

mystro 01-14-2014 01:31 PM

Thanks everyone! well an update on it is that It must need a connecting rod, I can turn the motor by hand but it turns a little too easy, I pulled the spark plug out in the dark last night and could not feel any compression. Its a little dis heartening, it sure is fun to get em running when you pull em out of the grave yard, but it will still be a fun project, just take a little longer. Pics tomorrow hopefully.

If the tractor has sat for a long time and has no compression you may just have a valve stuck open. Don't condemn the rod just yet. Take off the valve cover and look inside. Rotate engine and if valve is stuck, tappet will have large clearance between it and valve stem and valve will not have movement. You may know this but my last one suffered from this disease, freed up valve and compression returned.

If the tractor has sat in the woods for a long time, and you can actually turn the crank easily...... I'd be surprised if it was a stuck valve. Most of the time engines that sit outside for a long time get stuck.

cjrolke 01-15-2014 08:59 AM

looks good

ACecil 01-15-2014 12:39 PM

Not bad at all. Have seen some in a lot worse shape. Good luck with your 100!

mystro 01-16-2014 06:56 AM

Good news! I pulled the head off and everything moves and seems functional, I had to do some cleaning in there but everything is free! Unfortunately the wiring is a total mess so it might be a little while before i get to try and make her go.

OldAndInTheWay 01-16-2014 07:59 AM

My first Cub was found in the woods. A 124 with creeper and 3 point hitch. Not as rough as yours but be careful as they have a deadly bite and you will catch Yellow Fever from them.

Sugarmaker 01-16-2014 08:11 AM

Looks pretty complete! Nice job saving another Cub.
I have brought home ones that look worse!
Regards,
Chris

Great news!

mystro 01-21-2014 07:19 AM

update on the 100, got the majority of the parts I need rounded up, changed the steering tower out last night for a brand new one, got the majority of the wiring sorted out. Tonight I hope to get a starter generator put together for it, I've got all the brackets mounted back up that for some reason were missing also, my goal is to get it turning over next. Found a 10hp fuel tank on the shelf for it, so If I can round up a carb, I'll be ready to make her go.

IACubCadet 01-21-2014 09:16 AM

Good to hear Jake! Hope you get that 100 up and running soon!

mystro 01-21-2014 09:39 AM

thanks Ryan! I may borrow the carb off my 147 (which came off my 1250, which came off my 102) just for testing purposes, then I'll have to come up and help you look for a spare in your garage;)

IACubCadet 01-21-2014 09:51 AM

That sounds good! Better bring the trailer again, sounds like you might need it :biggrin2:

mystro 01-21-2014 10:00 AM

long as its not snowing again when I do:NailBite: lol

I must admit, I am shocked the motor was good (or didn't have a broken rod)! That is good news! Hope you get it running soon! :beerchug:

mystro 01-21-2014 02:27 PM

I was shocked myself, but what a pleasant surprise!

Glad to hear the engine is fine!:beerchug:
