Heavy duty spindles
i was wanting to see if anyone has done the heavy duty spindle swap to the front wheels. i saw one member with it done but i cant seem to find out who it was. i think it would be a good modification to my 1772 with the KW loader. so far the OEM ones have held up, but with a few hundred lbs. in the bucket who knows for how long. i see there is a kit from Xtream that looks good. if anyone has done this id love to see how its done and how it holds up. thanks!!

I did it. Check my post. I used 1500 lb. 1 1/2 square spindles and machined a block to give correct angle. PM me for pics.

I did not take pictures. I'll try to explain what I did. I cut two 2"x2" blocks of 1" steel. Drilled a 1" hole in the center and milled a 1-1/2 groove in the bottom at an angle to match the original spindle. It was about 1/4" on the inside out to almost nothing on the outside.
I cut the factory spindles about 3/4" below the axle and welded them from the bottom to the blocks I made then welded the 1-1/2" spindle in the machined groove. I took some 10"x6" trailer wheels and narrowed them to 4" and mounted tri-rib tires. Attachment 46306 I may just have too much time on my hands. |
Extreme Motorworks offers this service. I have bought several of their products and am very satisfied. They are good people to do business with.
I just opted to this on my own. |
looks pretty good. ill have to figure out a way to get the correct pitch since i don't have a mill. maybe i could miter cut the steel to 15* or so.
how are they holding up and do you notice any differences? |
I don't use my Cub, I just work on it and look at it, so far it's holding up very well.

What about welding in 1/2" thick gussets where the factory spindles are bent? I've seen this done before, and would be almost as strong as Tim's, just not as cool. Also, front hubs off of a Lo Boy, along with 5 lug 8" golf cart rims, would be stronger than what MTD/IH put there. |
GREAT JOB on the spindles!
Really wish you had taken more pics!...... We'll let you off the hook this time! But next time MORE PICTURES! :biggrin2::biggrin2: Just a thought: Why not machine of the bottom of the axle itself and put a thrust bearing between the spindly and the axle like a big tractor. It would make it easier to steer. :bigthink: |
interesting point CTRUEX. i just looked at a few pix of the lowboys front hubs. has the same bend as the cubs. your saying i could take lowboy hubs and install them on my axle and they would fit? if that's the case im in.

that's looks good, ill have to keep an eye out for some hubs and wheels.
seems like my to-do list never gets any shorter. |
I bought mine from Bob Hamilton. He sells Cub and Lo Boy stuff on eBay, and has his own website. Clicky $78 with bearings and $58 without. I don't remember paying that much. Don't forget the center caps!
